During WWI, Pershing went to Europe and took command of the American Expeditionary Force. Being in the first wave of American soldiers, Pershing had to create and organize his army from scratch. With no formal divisions and pressure from Europe to give his troops over to Britain to command, it was a hard job. He did settle with having some Americans in European formations, but they ultimately were American units.

Pershing presents a good example of a leader who is stubborn and will tell you what they think without making it sound nice, but also a leader who is willing to listen. Pershing also demonstrates the need for setting proper boundaries and trusting your decisions to result in success. Pershing is a great example of the importance of organization and how systems and the chain of command is such a good idea that is has stood the test of time.

General Pershing, like many leaders before him and many after, brought a unique set of characteristics and worked hard for his success and the success of those around him. While he had some failures and could be harsh at times, it was ultimately in the best interest of the Army and all of Europe to win the war against the central powers. His efforts contributed to the success against the Axis powers and continues even today with strict organization and effectiveness being a highlight of the Modern American military
