This relief panel, meaning it is not "in the round" but instead made to be looked at straight on, is believed to have been created around the same time and in the same location as the previous Vishnu Temple.
The influence of the Gupta period is seen in the soft and rounded flesh and curves of the figures. The classical use of strong wide-set shoulders gives a sense of strength. I'm also realizing that they were able to make Vishnu appear very strong and powerful here without the use of any muscle definition and while portraying the soft Gupta-inspired flesh and edges.

This painting is part of India's rich painting culture that today we know very little of due to the deterioration of the paintings in the hot humid climate of South Asia. This representation of Buddha is unique in that he seems to be in motion and adorned with jewelry and fine clothing.

These statues were the tallest Buddha sculptures in the world before they were blown up by the Taliban in 2001. Now the cavern they stood in lay empty. Their height ranged from 115-165 ft tall. According to the textbook, "Buddhist travelers may have offered gifts of thanks or prayers for safety" (Stokstad, Cothren).
