One of the many festivals of Umbria is the festival of the Ceri. The festival of Ceri is celebrated to honor the patron saint, Sant'Ubaldo, who died on May 16, 1160. The festival of Ceri is celebrated on May 15th in the city of Gubbio. The festival uses three wooden artifacts called candles(Cero in Italian) that are 5 meters and weigh 300 kilograms. Each candle is dedicated to a patron saint. Sant'Ubaldo, patron saint of bricklayers, St George, patron saint of tradesmen, and St Anthony Abbot, patron saint of farmers. A Ceraiolo is the people who carry the candles. The Ceraioli are the citizens or residents of Gubbio, women cannot carry the candles, only men that can run fast and can carry lots of weight on their shoulders. Ceraioli have to carry the candles for about 4 kilometers. The ceraioli are part of three teams, each carrying each candle each having their own outfit. Lots of tourists go to Umbria to experience this beautiful festival.

In the 6th century, the Umbri tribe inhabited Umbria and built some cities like Spoleto, Gubbio, and Assisi. Entruscans established towns like Perugia and Orvieto, and moved into the Umbri's land. The Umbri were forced out of their homes and into the Appenine mountains. In 295 B.C, the Umbri and Entruscans had to join forces to defeat the Romans, who wanted their land. In the 4th and 2nd centuries BC, Umbria was part of the Roman Empire. In 220BC, the Roman Emperor, Gaius Flaminius, made the Via Flaminia which became the main road through Umbria. It went from Rome to modern day Rimini and went through Terni, Spoleto, Foligno, and Trevi. After the fall of the Roman Empire, Umbria was invaded many times. In the 6th century, the Lombards founded the Duchy of Spoleto which ended the chaos. By the end of the 18th century, the French revolution started and invaded a big part of Italy which led to Umbria being part of the second Roman republic in 1798. In 1809, Umbria became a part of the Napoleonic Empire in 1809. After Napoleon's defeat, the pope regained control over Umbria until 1860. A year later, Umbria became part of the Kingdom of Italy.
