Trip To Nepal by Sijan Rai

The greatest time of my life began when the plane, I was in landed at the destination, Nepal. “Ahhh” I said to myself as I took a deep breath and smelt my motherland at the same time. It had been three years since I had last visited Nepal.

My parents hired a cab and we headed to our relative’s house as my parents had not purchased a land and a house yet. The bright sun beat down, the roads were bumpy and mysterious hills were on the horizon. There was dust everywhere, there were people selling vegetables by the road, lots of traffic jam and while you are waiting for the green light, homeless people would come knocking on your window for money! The taxi driver just ignored them while my mother gave them 20 rupees. It was nice to see a smile on their faces.

The next day we went out to a temple which was very far away from where we lived. I think it was about a 1 hour car ride. When we were near the temple we saw a 143-foot statue of Lord Shiva!It’s the tallest Lord Shiva statue in the world, although I’m guessing it probably doesn't have much competition. My dad filled me in on some juicy, little-known facts about Shiva, and apparently he was quite fond of marijuana. The weed god, if you will. I guess I can get behind a god who blazes every now and then.So we hung around the area for a while, relaxed and worshiped Shiva in the way we saw fit. It was a nice day.

The next day, we went to Boudhanath Buddhist Temple. It is the largest stupas in South Asia, and it has become the focal point of Tibetan Buddhism in Nepal. The white mound looms thirty-six meters overhead. Prayer flags were hung all over and in abundance. You would never see just one string if prayer flags, but several hung and tied together moving effortlessly in the breeze. It was just one of the most beautiful sights ever.

It took us about 15 minutes to reach our relative’s house and we were greeted warmly by our relative’s daughter, she had just come back from school and she was expecting us. We greeted her and went inside the house. She even helped to carry some of our luggage. I was happy that her parents were not around, if not they would compliment me so many times and talk about all the foolish things I did when I was a kid. I was really pissed off when I found that my bed was in the living room, but i was tired at the same time so I went to sleep.

It was six pm when the noise of my parents happily talking away with the relatives woke me up. I prayed to god that I hope my parents would buy a house here by the end of our vacation. I greeted my relatives by saying ' namaste ' because it is a polite thing to do. And true enough, they started to compliment me, I could do nothing but just smile and agree with them, We had our dinner and slept at 8 pm because the time zones are different from Singapore. I knew the next day was going to be a busy day so i went to sleep.

Prayer flags are hung and bless every area of Nepal, and you’ll see from the photos below that they make even the most desolate or impoverished areas look gorgeous. Everything was so breathtaking, and I couldn’t stop taking pictures. I have so many photos all over with prayer flags hanging in the background, but I picked a few of my favorites.

After a long and tiring day, we went to a restaurant and I ordered a plate of chicken momo with some soft drinks. It was so delicious that I had to order another plate of it!

After a few weeks, it was time to leave Nepal. I was pretty sad because I didn't have to study this holiday and school had started already in Singapore and I hate studying very much.Our relatives came followed us until the airport and then we wished them good health and goodbyes. We would only be able to see them again after three years.
