A ripple effect occurs when someone gets sick. It isn’t just the person who is sick who is affected but friends and family as well. You will also see communities also reaching out to offer help and support for the family. Echo’s Sister follows the journey of a 12-year-old girl Laughter who is starting in a new school while her sister battles a life-threatening illness. In this book we see all three essential questions being played out. We read about people trying to explain Echo’s illness to Laughter, a community coming together to help their family, and all of the family members learning how to deal with their personal feelings when coming to terms with Echo’s illness.

Mosier, P.
By Myself by Eloise Greenfield

This poem by Eloise Greenfield lists all the things she dreams to be when she closes her eyes. But when she opens them, she realizes what she wants to be the most is herself. When people are sick, it is sometimes hard to remember that their illness doesn’t define them. At the end of the day, they are still your friend or loved one and that person is still amazing. This poem would be great to read if a classmate is returning to school after being home for a while or if they look different than they did when they left. It reinforces the idea that they are still the same person they have always been.

Greenfield, E. (n.d.). By Myself by Eloise Greenfield.
Fighting Illness And Injury : The Immune System by Thomas Canavan

When someone gets sick, we tend to ask why. Why did they get sick? What did they do wrong? One way for students to gain an understanding of why someone gets sick is to teach students about the immune system. In this book by Thomas Canavan, students learn about how everyone has germs and everyone can get sick but it’s up to our bodies to fight back. The immune system is also cool to learn about because it heals everything from papercuts to surgeries. Teaching students about what is happening inside the body when someone is sick is laying the foundation for students to understand why people get sick and hopefully make them realize it isn’t something the person did that caused the illness and isn’t in their control.

Canavan, T.

This story primarily focuses on getting better from a cold. Staying home because you don’t always feel well isn’t always easy. Instead of playing or going out, you should be resting and laying down. It may not always be fun and can be boring, but you need to give yourself time to feel better. It also introduces the concept that being around others may get them sick. This book teaches people how to cope with being sick and also how to protect each other from potential illness.

Hill, S. L. (2017). When your elephant has the sniffles.

Listening to your body is how you know you don’t feel good. Katie wakes up feeling a little funny. Her head is heavy and her nose is running. Katie tells her mom how she feels and her mom explains to her what is happening. This book helps children understand the funny things they feel when they are sick and how they can get better. For example, Katie tells her mom she doesn’t feel good and her mom says she must have a bug. Katie then thinks that she has bugs in her stomach and her mom explains what “having a bug” means.

We have to protect those who are sick. This story explains the new concept of a mask to a child. When Lucy hears that her mother is making her a mask, she instantly runs to her room to get her costume mask. Lucy pretends to be many things a detective, pirate, a queen, and ultimately lands on a superhero. She pretends to fly and save people in her mask which hides her identity. Her mother comes into Lucy’s room to show her the new mask she has made for her, which covers her mouth and nose, and explain how this mask will actually help save many people. This book demonstrates how we can all keep each other safe to protect those who are sick around us.

Sirkis Thompson, L. (2020). Lucy's Mask.

What happens when you are the person who is sick? How much could your life change because of the disease? Kasey is in the pediatric hospital battling a rare (but treatable) bone disease. Her whole world is turned upside down as she has to spend a month in the hospital - which means no school and no hanging out with friends. Kasey documents her experience by writing letters to her friend Nina. She tells her about her new routine in the hospital, friends she has made in the hospital, and her trusty sidekick Ivy (her IV bag). This book can take some of the fear away if a student has an upcoming hospital stay and can also show how being there for someone, even if that means writing a simple letter, can have a positive impact on people.

Hughes, A.

Knowing someone who has or is battling cancer has become so common. Many people know at least one person who has been affected by this terrible disease. This book answers many questions that come up when someone they know is diagnosed with cancer. This book simplifies what cancer is, what it looks like to fight cancer, and reinforces the understanding that getting cancer isn’t the result of something the person has done. This book also shows the amazing spirit of communities that takes over when someone gets cancer. Fighting back against cancer is a lot easier when there is a community of people rallying for you to survive.

Stier, C. (2019). When A Kid Like Me Fights Cancer. This story follows Ariana Rose as she prepares to go back to school and has to go to the doctor for her school physical. This book focuses less on the physical side of illness and more on the emotional side. It talks about how Ariana is feeling about going back to school and how she is keeping a positive attitude through it all. This book is great for showing students how a positive attitude can change your outlook and also how an illness doesn’t define a person.

Feiner, A.

August Pullman looks different from other kids at his school. He was born with a facial difference and is going to school for the first time. Even though this book isn’t directly related to an illness, it does demonstrate ways we can help someone who is sick navigate going to school. The central message is to be kind regardless of what makes the person different. When someone is struggling with an illness, we all need to be kind. There are a lot of things changing around the person. They might be missing out on events or having to stay away from their family or friends for long periods. The best thing we can do to help people when they are sick is just to be kind and love them despite their illness.

Palacio, R. (2012). Wonder. Not just for the person going to the hospital but for their siblings as well. In this book, siblings Toby and Clemmie prepare for Clemmie’s next stay at the hospital. They both love each other very much and they hate when Clemmie has to go to the hospital. This book not only tries to make hospital stays less scary, it also shows how siblings can be a source of support and how they can help someone who is sick overcome their illness. This is not only meant for someone battling an illness but also to prepare siblings for their sister or brother’s hospital stay.

Elliott, R. (2011). Sometimes.

A cancer diagnosis can rock an entire family to its core. In this book, two siblings start to build a perfect shelter only to have it torn down by storms. This metaphor long story relates to how a family tries to protect each other at all costs but sometimes, something comes and breaks their perfect shelter. In this family's case, it was their youngest daughter getting cancer. This is a phenomenal book to get students talking about their feelings. Maybe they are worried or fearful, maybe they are angry or sad. But out of all of those feelings comes courage and hope. Even in the word storms, the love of family will always prevail.

Walsh, C. (2020). The Perfect Shelter.

Sometimes people focus so much on the person that is sick, they forget to check in on the friends and family members who are also dealing with the news of their loved one’s illness. In this book, we hear about Snibbles and Big Tree who are the best friends there could ever be. One day, Big Tree gets sick and Snibbles gets mad. He doesn’t know what to do with all the anger he feels so he starts yelling and acting out. All Snibbles wants is for Big Tree to get better so they can play like they used to. Snibbles learns coping strategies to deal with his friend being sick and also learns the hard lesson that not everything is in our control.
