On Monday, we're going to be focusing on some helpful testing strategies. We want to make sure our students feel confident and ready. We'll also be doing a bit of self-reflection on our recent escape room adventure, which should be a fun way to wrap up the class period.

Now, about the STAAR test on Tuesday—I just want to remind you to encourage your student to get a good night's sleep on Monday and to have a healthy breakfast on Tuesday morning. And please, tell them not to stress too much. Exams can feel overwhelming, but they're not the only thing that matters.

After the Reading STAAR, we'll be mixing ELA with Science to help our students get ready for their Science STAAR test on April 17th. It's all about making sure they're prepared and feeling confident across the board.

During snack time, students have a chance to refuel and recharge. We give them a quick 5-minute break to enjoy a healthy snack. Please send your student a tasty, nutritious snack to keep their energy up and their minds ready to learn.

• Heat Guidelines:

  • 94 degrees or heat index above 99: 25 minutes max outside.

  • Above 100 degrees or heat index above 105: No outdoor activities.

• Cold Guidelines:

  • Below 32 degrees or wind chill below 30: 25 minutes max outside.

  • Temps below 20 degrees: No outdoor activities.

Elementary students in grades 2-5 may possess telecommunication devices; however, these devices are only to be used for instructional purposes under the direction of a teacher. These devices should be turned off and not visible at all other times during the school day on school property, including on school transportation.

Please remind your child of the risks involved in bringing toys to school—loss, theft, or damage.

First up, on April 25th, we'll be heading to the Museum of Fine Arts Houston. Fee to attend is $4.00.

Then, on May 14th, get ready to cheer because we're off to Reckling Park to watch Rice Baseball vs. Texas Southern! Fee to attend is $10.00.

Safe Viewing:

Eye safety is the most important aspect of this day.  We've discussed this as a class, but please help your student understand the significance of NOT staring at the sun. To directly view the eclipse, ISO-approved solar viewers are required. We have a few ISO-approved solar viewers to rotate amongst students. but if your student has their own ISO-approved solar viewers or even a welding mask, they may bring it.

In the Katy area, the total solar eclipse event starts Monday, April 8, at 12:19 PM, with max coverage at 1:39 PM, and concludes by 3:00 PM. Coverage in the Katy area is 95%; however, the same eye safety precaution is still required. 

If you have any questions, concerns, or would not like for your student to participate in this event, please let your student's teacher know.

1. Get a good night’s rest. Go to bed early and turn off all electronics 30-60 minutes before bedtime to allow your mind to rest. STAAR tests can be long, so it is important to be well-rested for the day.

2. Be prepared! Have your clothes and school items ready to go early in the morning!

3. Have a balanced and nutritious breakfast to fuel your mind! Don’t forget that all Katy ISD schools serve free breakfast.

4. Arrive at school on time to prepare. Teachers will make sure you have the supplies needed to begin the test.

5. Don’t rush. Be sure to read directions and questions completely and answer each question fully. If you don’t know the answer or response, come back to it after finishing up other questions.

6. Have confidence! Stay positive and try your best, and you will surely rock the STAAR!
