The use of rewards and recognition allows leaders to retain their nursing staff. The use of non-traditional monetary rewards is becoming more of an incentive for staff and can prove a challenge for leaders in an industry that is highly competitive (Seitovirta, Vehvilainen-Julkunen, Mitronen, & De Gieter, 2016)

One study suggests that the use of verbal and written praise, which does not cost organizations money, can be just as good at retaining nurses as financial rewards. Praising staff is often times over looked in a busy fast paced nursing industry but does goes a long way in allowing staff to feel valued at their organization. Feeling valued is a trait that can prevent nurses from leaving an organization. Managers using praise is not only a cost-effective tool it also takes little time and shows employees that they are valued (Sveinsdottir, Ragnarsdottir, & Blondal, 2016).

Encouraging nursing managers to give verbal and written praise and recognition to employees may be one way of increasing job performance and satisfaction. The healthcare industry must have support leaders in order to retain employees and allow them to feel support. Nursing managers must also be open to listening to their employee’s ideas on different financial and non-financial rewards (Seitovirta, Vehvilainen-Julkunen, Mitronen, & De Gieter, 2016).
