Hi, my name is Yuwen Feng, and I’m currently a Marketing major at Rutgers University. I’m originally from China, and I’ve been studying in the U.S. to strengthen both my academic and communication skills. last semester, I felt lost in the unfamiliar surroundings and challenge. Over the semester, I’ve grown into someone more confident in organizing ideas and editing my work. Writing has become a meaningful tool for me to explore ideas and express myself. I’m excited to continue this journey.

Literacy Autobiography

For my Writing Project 1, I wrote a literacy autobiography about my journey as a writer, starting from my childhood. I shared how I began writing in Chinese during elementary school, and how that experience shaped my love for storytelling and self-expression. After coming to the U.S., writing in English became a new challenge for me, especially when trying to express personal feelings and cultural experiences. In this project, I reflected on the struggles and progress I’ve made with writing in a second language. One of the most meaningful parts was realizing how writing helped me understand myself better and connect my past with my present.

Analysis and Synthesis Paper-Final Draft

For Writing Project 2, I wrote a research paper about how the loss of one’s mother tongue can affect an immigrant’s cultural identity, self-expression, and family relationships. I used sources from our class, including academic articles and real-life examples, to support my argument. This topic was meaningful to me personally, as someone living in a different language environment.

My first Writing Center visit

I had a valuable experience at the Writing Center, where tutor Cara helped me improve both Writing Project 1 and 2. For Project 1, she pointed out that my verb tenses were sometimes inconsistent. Thus, I revised the draft by checking tense consistency and adding mini-conclusions to the end of each body paragraph for smoother transitions. For Project 2, she helped me improve quote analysis and reduce repetitive ideas, especially around the cultural meaning of dumplings. I also learned to use better transition words and improve sentence variety to make my writing moreclear. Overall, the session helped me see how structure, grammar, and deeper analysis can make my writing stronger.

My First Library visit to get help on research

As part of my research process for Writing Project 2, I visited the Douglass Library to find a physical source related to my topic—the impact of mother tongue on immigrants’ cultural identity. With the help of a librarian, I learned how to search the Rutgers Library website using filters, keywords, and subject categories. Through this process, I found a useful book Russian Diaspora: Culture, Identity, and Language Change. Chapter 8 focused on language maintenance, which directly supported my argument. I went to Alexander Library to find the book myself. This experience made me feel more confident using the library system for future research.

Research Paper

For Writing Project 3, I wrote a research paper titled “How Mother Tongue Loss Weakens Immigrants’ Identity, Self-Expression, and Family Connections.” In this project, I explored how losing one’s native language can negatively affect immigrants’ sense of cultural identity, ability to express emotions, and relationships across generations. I supported my argument with sources from three different authors, who all discuss the deep connection between language and culture. This topic felt meaningful to me as an international student, and I also included some personal reflection about how speaking English every day in college sometimes makes me feel more distant from my roots. Through this project, I improved my ability to use academic sources effectively and organize arguments clearly.

In this reflection, I talked about how I’ve grown as a writer during this semester. I learned how to organize my ideas better, use outlines and topic sentences, and see writing as a way to think clearly, not just to complete an assignment. One of the biggest challenges for me was revising deeply, especially in my second essay, where I had to improve my thesis and structure.
