Many governments ignored the important environmental problems but was forced by community to deal with local pollution problems. 
During this time, many countries introduced acts such as the clean air acts and clean water acts. 
pollution is what the environmentalists mainly protested against. 
The first Earth Day was in April of 1970 where protests erupted against environmental ignorance. (Sound familiar?) 
Dr. Seuss writes the Lorax in response to Lake Eerie's debris combustion into flames.

The group of people occupied the island to raise awareness towards the way the government treats reservations. 
The conditions of the island symbolized conditions of many of the reservations. No running water, outdated sanitary facilities, and the such. On the reservations, death rates were higher than the US average, birth rates were higher, and living conditions were similar to the conditions of Latin america.

There was not much choice in a woman's life with what she wanted to do. Women were unwelcome in professional establishments. Men would try to keep women out of nursing/medical school. Women were paid significantly less salaries than men, and denied any opportunities to excel. 
The movement in the 70's mainly focused on the inequality in the workforce. The young feminists even considered the old generation of feminists needs "not radical enough." Many people think of "anti-men" when they hear feminist, when that's not what it's about. Yes, there are feminists who are anti-men, but the overall term "feminist" is used for people who want equality for ALL genders socially and economically. (I mean, men were "anti-women" in the workforce and social areas for a long time now, I wouldn't be too surprised if some women were upset by that. There were REALLY upset back in the 70's). In the early 70's, young women started further studying things such as medical, law, and business. 
Black feminists targeted things such as child care, police repression, welfare, and health care. This founded the National Black Feminist Organization in 1973. 
By the end of the 70's, the feminist movement slowed down quite a bit, but the work they had done changed everything. Rape crisis shelters, women's shelters, and healthcare clinics were moving into nearly every town. 
Along with that, women's equal access to education, abortion and birth control, existence of resources for rape victims were put into motion due to this movement.

Stonewall is a monument for gay pride. The gay-pride month of June began in the 70's, along with the many marches across the nation. During this time the rights for homosexuals were recognized and granted. Although today headlines feature religious people resisting against the gay movement, many of the leading pastors and religious people acknowledged that gay people are human and deserve rights in the 70's.  During the 70's, gay people often found shelter in churches. 
 Before these rights, acts of homosexuality (casual or martial) could end with up to 10 years in prison.
Many people who were part of the civil rights movement, also support the LGBT movement, and also supported the women's rights movement.

Throughout the 70's, the rise of the black middle class became apparent and more black people were in the higher level of workforce, especially politics.  In 1970, Dr. Clifton Wharton Jr. was appointed president of Michigan State University, whom was the first african american president in an exclusively white school. Along with that, black families tried moving into exclusively white suburbs, but they were usually chased out by white people. But the 2010's as well. What I did was pick current protests similar to the protests going on in the 70's to bring realization that there are still problems in the world (although the gay pride one is a celebratory thing) and people still need the justice they deserve.
