The 88-page novella on the PRL packs a punch. Set in 1945 Czechoslovakia, it follows the coming of age of 22-year-old train dispatcher, Milos Hrma. He's more preoccupied with becoming a man than the war around him but both ideas will inevitably collide by the novel's conclusion. There's some quite mature themes that might not suit a more conservative school setting.

Kehinde Wiley, a contemporary African-American artist, travels the world painting 'ordinary people' off the streets. He subverts expectations by taking classic artwork and reimagining them with more diverse faces. His artwork spans the world and addresses numerous global issues. There are lots of intertextual links to be made too: 'The Yellow Wallpaper' collection; his exploration of classical Greek gods and goddesses; 'Napoleon Leading the Army over the Alps' (as seen above), to name a few.

A Small Place by Jamaica Kincaid

This 80-ish page non-fiction polemic essay explores the island of Antigua, Kincaid's homeland. Write in 1988, shortly after the island's independence from the UK, Kincaid confronts her country's problems including colonialism, corruption and tourism. This metaphor of the 'Small Place' applies to so many places in the world and Kincaid's anger makes this piece accessible and engaging.

A 21st century Novel/Screenplay that deals with the experience of a Chinese American actor, trying to make it in Hollywood. The text is comedic and very Meta, as the reader is made to question whether the protagonist is performing an acting role, or merely experiencing his own life. The novel questions the nature of representation and how systemic forces restrict minorities in the US.
