Haircut

In this photo, I was a sophomore in high school and decided to cut my hair off and try something new. During that time it was not accepted by males and society for women to have short haircuts because they would be considered lesbian or masculine. In our previous lecture, we learned about the dimensions of hegemonic femininity and the dimensions included physical attractiveness, slimness, and sexually appealing, under the stipulations of the patriarchal male gaze along with a few others. However, with my haircut, I would often hear the boys at my high school question why I decided to cut my hair and describe me as looking like a boy. I noticed when I would have my hair in long weaves that's when the boys at my school would gravitate to me and consider me "feminine". We still see today how long weaves and long hair is more accepted in comparison to short hair for a woman because of its relation to femininity.

Perception

In this photo, we see a picture of someone wearing a pink hoodie and black nail polish. People's first impression of this photo was to automatically assume that because the person is wearing pink and nail polish that this individual identifies as female. Throughout the course, we learned about gender not being straightforward and the patriarchy that comes with identifying as male and female. I often hear people say all the time that the color pink is for girls whereas blue is for boys. Often when a male is wearing the color pink he is perceived as a homosexual or his "manliness" is questioned. Seeing this picture reminds me of how quick society is to perceive something or someone as feminine or masculine based on what they wear or how they carry themselves.

This is a picture of my cousin who resides in the country of Barbados. He is dressed in a costume to celebrate and participate in an event that we call crop over. My cousin is someone who identifies himself as a bisexual man. Within our Bajan culture, men are supposed to be providers of the household and be dominant whereas the females are supposed to be stay at home wives and submissive. Growing up my cousin was always scared to be his true self which led to him accommodating to gender norms. Accommodation to gender norms means we perform gender in a way that is socially expected of us. Often, I remember my cousin would always try to show his "manliness" by exhibiting violence to feel respected as a man. Now that various gender identities are accepted within this country, he is able to speak and express himself more freely as a bisexual man.

Drag Queen show

Last week friends birthday we went to see a Drag Queen show. This is not something that we typically would engage in however we decided to do something different. Our waiter identified themselves as a drag queen with the pronouns of she/they/he. Miss Chandi explained to my friends and I how much of a struggle it was to express themself. The best way Miss Chandi was able to expressed themself was to perform. It reminds me of the lecture where we discussed the significance of resistance to specific norms. When we are resistant to specific social norms it can sometimes lead to getting bullied, family relationships being strained and feeling scared of negative feedback. The show ended up being a success and my friends and I were amazed at the confidence that these Drag Queens had.

Non traditional Wedding

This past weekend I went to a family wedding with my cousin and his now husband. My cousin is also from Barbados and his husband is Haitian. When my cousin first announced the news to the family, he was looked down upon and instantly told about the Bajan traditions. In previous lectures, we discussed variations in gender that has existed across time and cultures. Culture is something that is always evolving but can be very hard to step out of when it comes to specific norms. The traditional norm within my culture is to marry a woman and have children. Resistance within social norms can have its own rewards as well as consequences. In this case the consequence was family relationships being strained as well as the feeling of negative feedback.
