The American Dream as it says online is a belief that anyone no matter where they are born or what class they were born into can attain their own version of success. Most people's American Dream is to have a family, a nice home and car, and to be able to support their family. I believe the American Dream only applies to certain people like people of the higher income bracket because they have more opportunities than someone in a lower income bracket. My american dream is to have a good job that I actually enjoy, graduate college, have a home, and to be able to travel to different places.

The person I chose to interview was my sister. My interviewees American Dream is to have financial stability, own a home, and be able to provide for her family. She believes the american dream is possible and exists. She also believes it is realistic to achieve to a certain extent because there can be barriers in the process. She has achieved her hopes and dreams because she has a stable job and is able to provide her family. She states that her parents influenced her american dream they are the ones who showed her what it was and the steps to accomplish it. She says her parents always told her to never give up and that she did follow it because she didn't want to let them down.

The Distance Between Us

In the distance between us Reyna talks about how her dad never accomplished his dreams. She also talks about how her dad couldn't get a good enough job to support them with no struggles because he didn't have his green card and because he was using a fake social security he bought. In chapter 11 Reyna says "He didn't mention that he himself wasn't getting much out of his job because he was using a social security he'd bought at MacArthur park for a hundred bucks." This shows that the American Dream only applies to certain groups of people like in this case people who have a green card or are born in the U.S. It is difficult to achieve it when you don't have a good enough job like Reyna's dad.

The poem, Mother to Son by Langston Hughes explains how it wasn't easy for her to accomplish what she wants. she states that she went through the dark, through corners, and even through different land. she encourages us to keep going and to never give up even when we fall because even shes still climbing. This supports my thesis because it explains how its not easy and how you have to keep going therefore it only applies to certain groups like those who work hard. When Langston Hughes states" so boy don't you turn back, don't you set down on those stairs" she tells us not to give up.

The article I used to support my thesis is "how did the American Dream die for you?" by The New York Times. This article supports my thesis because they ask people how it died for them and they talk about how it doesn't exist for people like them meaning it is only exists depending on your race, gender, income bracket, and where you were born. In the article one girl states"when I became aware of the fact that my family was considered "illegal" my childhood consisted of me fearing "la migra" and having terrible anxiety over the fact that i could someday be separated from my parents and siblings". This shows that she could never accomplish it because she was always living in fear.

This video supports my thesis that the american dream only applies to certain groups. I picked this video because it goes to show that race, gender, class, and social privilege all have a part in the american dream. In this video it states that African American students leave school with a bigger debt than white students. this shows that it is harder to accomplish your american dream because of your race. It also states that "African Americans need two more levels of education than their young white counterparts to have the same chance of employment". This states that African Americans have it harder to achieve their american dream compared to white people who have it easy all because of their race. These factors make it harder for them to advance in life.
