How the final scene pissed me off. As the viewer, I wanted the satisfaction of seeing Rachel safe and all the evil in the world dispelled. But of course that was not the objective of the movie as it is supposed to be sad and life is short. There is never sunlight and constant rain. Cutting it off there lets the climax fully sit in and remain present in the mind when walking out of the theatre. It lets viewers ponder the results and revisit their morals and definitions. It does not let me gloss over it and simply enjoy a happy ending.

Can we talk about the commentary on the universal fear of death inherent in the replicants. Gaff maybe didn't have this fear?Roy wasn't afraid of death right before he died because he had lived so much? Are Decker, the other replicants, or Rachel scared of death?
Can we talk about Decker constantly trying to climb above Roy, but never being able to.

One aspect of the film that caught my eye was the humanity of the replicants. Though originally not programmed to have emotions, the replicants developed feelings by themselves. By making the replicants seem more human, through Rachael’s sensitive/kind personality, Roy and Pris’s romantic relationship, and Roy’s choice to spare Deckard’s life, it makes the death of the replicants more impactful, and makes it more emotionally conflicting to root for the protagonist.

Rachel “unlocking” human emotions (affection, love, sadness) in Deckard’s apartment and starting to own herself as she took control of her image by taking her hair down and seeking information about her truth. However, when she plays the piano it’s staccato and she plays it exactly as written, making it sound robotic; thus, reminding the viewer that she is a replicant throughout this otherwise human scene.

The animals that Gaff kept leaving around. They were small and constantly showing up in places or the house of someone who was about to die. Is this hinting that Rachael is going to die soon? We obviously know that Deckard is very much still alive due to his presence in 2049. Also, the ziggurat shape of the Tyrell building? Does Tyrell's death imply that Roy is Lucifer? What does this mean in terms of how we should view Roy and his death?

The metaphors/motifs surrounding mothers. When Leon is asked about his mother, it is his breaking point in the replicant test. Is this because he doesn't have a mother? Rachel only seems to accept the fact that she is a replicant when it is revealed that the picture of her mother is fake. Is having a mother the biggest difference between the newest replicants and humans? Finally, the story of Tyrell's niece's/Rachel's memory of the mother spider spending all summer building a web to lay an egg. Then, when it hatched, hundreds of baby spiders ate the mother. Is this foreshadowing the death of Tyrell at the hands of his own creation (Roy/replicants)?

How the city seems to be almost alive, like it's more technology reaching out to try and influence people (evolving, just like the replicants). One example of this is when the flying billboard shot is seen many times during important scenes, like the tech is everywhere no matter when we go within the city. It gave me a weird sense that I was being watched. A specific moment was during Zhora's chase scene. Throughout almost the entire scene, the traffic light could be heard. In the beginning, it said normal phrases that you would associate with walking signals (walk, stop, wait, etc.). But if you took a moment, it was almost as if these were instructions for Deckard and where to look for Zhora. This continued throughout the encounter, but what made me realize the connection was when the small crowd of people were onlookers to the murder, and the signal chants "Move on", which they do. Like the city/tech is influencing them to "move on" and forget what had just happened.

The effect of lighting in the movie? The movie starts out dark, with brown smog, flame-spewing towers, and lights that stretch to the horizon. The city is shadowy, and the only illuminated buildings are Tyrell's pyramids, which shoot out light into the sky like massive spotlights. It feels like the Tyrell Corporation has sucked the light out of the city.
It's also interesting how the sun is only shown once, and all other sources of light throughout the film are artificial. The only time we see the sun/sunlight is in Tyrell's office, but Deckard says, "It's too bright in here," and they lower the blinds. It's as though Deckard's work can only be done in the dark, like most noir protagonists.

It’s interesting to see the way that this movie is a retro-futurist depiction of LA.
There is ambiguous diversity and urbanization times 10 in the visibly overpopulated city, as people are brought together by the promise of opportunity that is continually advertised. Even with such dense crowds, there is still a sense of loneliness/ individualism(?) seen as they all rush next to each other to different places or only communicate for business purposes. This is also seen with the main characters who are well off, but end up isolated and/or finding connection in robots, rather than other people. J.F. Sebastian and Tyrell have built industrial empires that they stay on earth for and choose to keep building robots to accompany them. Even the protagonist ends up in a romantic relationship with Rachael the replicant.
