Child traffickers target orphanages in Haiti, and the children are sexualy and phisicaly abused. About 30,000 children live in orphanages even though 4 in 5 kids have at least one living parent. In Haiti people will be paid to give their children to an orphanage so they can eat. They sell their children because they think their children will be fed and sheltered, when in most cases they are not taken care of. Children have reported having cold water dumped on them and them being forced to sleep on the floor.

These orphanages are one of the most targeted places by child traffickers. About 300,000 children are affected by child trafficking in Haiti. The majority of child trafficking is because of the restavek system. The restavek system is where children are forced to work for wealthier families. They are often given up by their parent who hope they will get an education and a good upbringing. Even though they are not bought or owned and are allowed to run away or go back to their families it is still considered slavery.

They can very in age between young children and young women. The majority of people affected by child trafficking are females between the ages of 6 and 14.women are often forced to work and are almost always sexualy and phisicaly abused. Women are also trafficked for sexual exploitation. Males around the same age are forced to work until they are adults.

Right now Haiti is on a tier two watchlist. This means they do not meet the minimum standard for Trafficking Victims Protection Act but are doing everything they can to meet the standards. Laws in Haiti prohibit abuse, exploitation and violence. It declares that all children have the right to education. Haiti passed a law that made child trafficking a crime that could lead to a 15 year prison sentence. Unfortunately, because of lack of enforcement and the time it takes to respond to suspicious activities and run trials, child trafficking is still a big issue.
