Main Idea #3: Apathy Towards Reading

One issue with the increase in apathy is the mandatory reading that students are required to do through Accelerated Reader; the implementation of this program forces students to read novels then take a test that they must pass in order to receive points. Unfortunately, the program “tends to induce a student mindset that ‘reading is a chore,’ and ‘a job that has to be done’” (Pennington).

A survey conducted in the “UK in 2021 found 51.5% of children and young people (including teenagers) said they enjoyed reading”; unfortunately, this statistics is not nearly the same in the United States where “people between the ages of 15 and 44 only read for an average of 10 minutes or less per day (Literacy Trust; Bureau of Labor Statistics).

Main Idea #2: Lack of engaging materials leads to uninterested readers

As noted by a study conducted by the Pew Research Center (below), there has been a steady increase since 1984 of 9, 13, and 17-year-olds that “never or hardly ever” read for fun. In 2020, middle school students, or 13-year-olds, have the highest number of students that “never or hardly ever” read; more importantly, middle school students also saw the largest decline of 35% to 17% of students that used to read “almost every day” (Pew Research Center).

Solution #1: Reading habitually

Millionaire Warren Buffett relates reading to being successful: “Read 500 pages like this every day. That’s how knowledge works. It builds up, like compound interest. All of you can do it, but I guarantee not many of you will.” While one does not have to read 500 pages a day to be successful, as Buffett claims, other renowned and wealthy individuals have taken up the habit of reading repetitively in their daily routine, including Mark Cuban, Oprah Winfrey, and Elon Musk (Carlos).

Currently, high school students expect to be entertained by the reading they’re assigned in class, yet 54.5% rate themselves as average readers in terms of confidence. Increasing one’s reading habits over time “make [them] more confident, empathetic, and a better decision maker” (Grothus).

While one can create activities from scratch, there are numerous resources on the internet and through social media that should be implemented and that require critical thinking. For example, teacher Facebook pages, such as The Secondary ELA Teacher Lounge, and websites, such as Teach Between the Lines and The Daring English Teacher, are incredibly helpful resources that supply teachers with ideas and even lesson plans.
