Friend to Christopher Robin and the animals of the Hundred-Acre Wood (Achieved)

Winnie The Pooh's role (the expected behaviors of someone of his status) as a friend is to interact with and comfort his friends. He also expects, as their friend, to receive comfort in return when he is feeling down. As friends, these individuals hang out together, explore the woods together, share meals, and more.

The way he uniquely performs these roles of "friend" is called his role performance. Winnie The Pooh is an exceptionally soft-spoken and kind friend. He is always willing to help out and try his best.

This role is an achieved role because in order to be friends with these individuals, Winnie The Pooh had to reach out and maintain a relationship with them. He made the conscious choice to be nice to them and facilitate a relationship so they could all be friends.

Bear/Animal (Ascribed)*

Winnie The Pooh's role as a bear is to be soft, fluffy, a bit chubby and hungry. Bears-- in cartoons, anyway-- tend to be loving and very cute.

This role is ascribed because he had no choice in the fact that he is a bear. He can't control which species he belongs to.

In the story, Winnie The Pooh has been personified, to the point that he wears a shirt and speaks English. His shirt could be thought of as a status symbol, something that gives hints to his standing among others. Winnie The Pooh is one of the only characters who wears clothing, which tells viewers that he is the main character and that he has taken on some human traits due to his friendship with Christopher Robin.

Resident of The Hundred-Acre Wood (Ascribed)

As a resident of The Hundred-Acre Wood, Winnie The Pooh has a responsibility to protect the woods and care for the other animals who inhabit it. This is the role he plays as part of his status as a resident of The Hundred-Acre Wood. It is also expected that he spends a considerable amount of time in these woods and that he knows his way around well.

This role is most likely ascribed, since Winnie The Pooh was probably born in these woods and stayed there throughout his life. He had no choice in the matter.

Within these roles, Winnie The Pooh sometimes experiences role strain. For example, since Winnie The Pooh is expected to care for his fellow residents of the woods, sometimes, there's too much to deal with at once. He doesn't want to neglect his friends, but there simply isn't enough time to help everyone at once. This would cause stress and strain for him. On a normal day, the issues he'd have to deal with would hopefully be spread out so that he'd be able to deal with them in a timely manner.

Winnie The Pooh is known among his friends and fans for having quite the appetite for sweet honey. His role of "honey-lover" is to have lots of it in his home and always be craving it.

He achieved this role by developing an affinity for honey and choosing to keep lots of it in his house.

The status symbol associated with this status is his belly. Because he eats lots and lots of honey every day, he is a little chubby. Because of this, it is clear to anyone that he likes to eat honey.

Naive, Slow-Witted Character (Achieved)

Winnie The Pooh's role as the slow-witted, naive character is to always try his best, but sometimes miss things and jump to incorrect conclusions.

He likely achieved this role by prioritizing other things (such as lovingness and kindness) rather than his wits. Some could argue that this is an ascribed role, as some people are naturally more witty than others. But we don't know if his slow nature has anything to do with the way he was raised or his priorities.

Often, this presents a role conflict for Winnie The Pooh. He always wants to try his best and be able to provide everything for his friends, but his role as the naive and slow-witted character sometimes stands in his way. He has to balance these two things, which is why Winnie The Pooh is known for always trying his best.

Winnie The Pooh's master status (the status that overrides all others in a social situation) is his "bear" status. Since this is how he presents, and he has very clear bear features, this is how people perceive him. This initial perception can make or break their future perceptions of him, even once he's switched to another status or role.

Associated with this cartoon bear status are characteristics of lovingness, kindness, cuteness, and chubbiness.
