When COVID first really hit, it was a shock. I remember one week being in journalism class and listening to the news stories taking place in Wuhan. Then, the very next week, there was no school and we were stuck in our houses. It felt, in a small way, like the world was ending. I also remember my family needing to go to the grocery store, and even that small trip was scary. We had no idea what this virus could do. We were worried for our families meanwhile everything was being shut down. I tried my best to take it all in, a little at the time. It was something so new, and it actually excited me because I'd never experienced something like this before, let alone a pandemic.

Coping With Troubling Times

The pandemic shut so much down. School, sports, businesses, restaurants. Traveling was also restricted. The biggest troubles I had were not being able to play soccer, school becoming completely virtual and not being able to socialize or leave the house. Of course I had to find ways to cope and adapt with these situations. For soccer, my team began doing virtual sessions which I looked forward to, it was somewhat more normal. For school I learned to be more self-motivated and focused. After a while I finally got the hang of all the technology and online resources we used. Microsoft teams was the biggest part of online school. My family started going on more hikes, we also went to the soccer field every once in a while to get out of the house and get some sun and fresh air.

During the first couple months of COVID I truly struggled with self-motivation, being stuck in the house and restricted from going places really took a toll on me. The greatest asset I got from that situation is now being able to motivate myself and get things done. Because of this skill I have gotten better with procrastination. I think these things will help me in college where I will need to be more self-reliant and responsible for myself.

Different Views On COVID

My close family has been pretty calm with COVID. We know that it is serious, but we are not over protective of each other or too close on following some of the stricter rules. Now my grandparents on my mother's side are very cautious and protective. Which I understand, they are older and have had some minor health issues. However, it makes me sad because when we visit we can't touch or hug them and we stay six feet apart. The same goes with my mother's sister and my cousins, they take many precautions. I miss them and it's not the same when we see each other. My dad's side of the family is more loose with the rules and not as worried, we've been able to visit them and hug them, which I was really happy about.

This pandemic has no doubt impacted every person worldwide in someway. I know there have been many that have had it worse than others, some easier. One of the worst effects has been extreme job loss across the United States, making it hard for families to put food on the table and pay their bills. A more emotional side of COVID is with students, especially juniors and seniors, who's last couple school years are and have basically been canceled.

Importance of Healthcare Workers

Healthcare personnel are continuously on the frontline of this dangerous pandemic. Throughout the whole time they have been brave and have remained our largest hope to end this worldwide virus. Daily, nurses and doctors take care of the sick, they work long hours making sure we are safe and healthy, doing everything they can. They deserve our greatest gratitude, I don't think I could do what they do. I have seen them on the news, how tired they look, but they have a cause and are fighting for it.

School has drastically changed for everyone around the world. The first week COVID hit the US we were all sent home and we had no school. After that week the school administrations and public school system decided to have virtual class. We began having video calls and doing all of our work through Schoology and other online resources. At first, it was pretty hard, I hadn't ever done that before and I became fully responsible for my own learning. I got used to it, however, and I began to like it because I can get my work done more quickly now and I have more free time. Of course, the social aspect of school is not here anymore, which I miss.

The first time I went to a grocery store since the beginning of lockdown it was so weird and somewhat terrifying. Every person wore a mask, and if you weren't they had the right to not let you in. There were lines and carts lined up outside stores to keep people separate. I remember the signs that said "6 feet apart". Another crazy thing is how all of the cleaning supplies disappeared within days. Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, paper towels, cleaning chemicals as did many of the canned goods and dried foods.

Soccer is my passion, when high school ball was canceled for my first season in Varsity I was so upset and I couldn't believe it. Around the same time my club practices were canceled and tournaments were postponed. It felt like my life was turning upside down and around. My club team started doing zoom technical and workout sessions to have someway to practice together, though it was in no way the same. After a month we finally were able to have practices again, COVID style. I was so happy and it was a little normalcy in the midst of the madness. I think something I learned from all this is to appreciate everything you have and can do.
