ETHICAL VALUES

ISSUES
- trip over a cat during night
-The goal is to use genetically modified cats as a better proxy for human diseases
-FIV plagues cats in much the same way that HIV plagues people
-manipulating the cat genome to test potential gene therapies for HIV and other potential cures for AIDS.
-cats can serve as useful animal models for learning more about the human version of the disease.
-Devastating AIDS pandemic
-The world is facing two devastating AIDS pandemic.One in human,other in domestic cat.
-The viruses responsible,Human immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)(affect human) and Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) are highly similar.
-In both human and cats,protein called restriction factors that normally fight off viral infection are defenseless against HIV and FIV counter weapons.
 
SOLUTIONS 
-Cat that can glow in the dark from new genetic engineering (biotechnology) technique are helping scientist to study molecules that could stop AIDS.
-Researcher explain that cat are much better models for AIDS than mice and other animals.
-The aim of the research is to create cats that are immune to the feline immunodeficiency virus(FIV) as well as identifying ways to combat HIV/AIDS in humans.
-It is also hoped the experiment will prove a natural protein can prevent cat from contriving FIV,just as it can in macaque monkeys,who naturally have a restriction factor against the virus.
 
-The researcher from Mayo Clinic have modified the DNA of domestic moggies with two different genes;a fluorescent jellyfish gene and another which can fight feline AIDS,a close relative of the human HIV/AIDS virus.
 
-Both genes were injected into the female cat’s eggs prior to fertilisation from a male cat and the genes were passed on to their kittens.
 
-The jellyfish gene was used to track the restrictive protein to see if it was successfully transferred,making the kittens glow green under a UV light if they are reproducing the protein in their tissues.
 
-Also this biomedical research is benefiting both human and feline health

PROS AND CONS
-     Many advantages come along with florescent cats. One advantage that glow in the dark cat owners have come to realize is they can easily find their cats when using blue light. In addition, it provides the ability to find out if AIDS protection genes can work on animals. Also, it helps with the treatment of cats, as well as humans. As you can see, the creation of glow in the dark cats is extremely beneficial. 

-    Glow in the dark cats come with a variety of disadvantages. One being the unknown side effects. Another being the possibility that our discoveries from research on these cats many not work on humans. Lastly, this is extremely expensive.
