1. "Decisive" mood at the beginning of the poem seems to contrast with the “despair” at the end of the poem. (I think so because I have read many Russian translations but may be, the author didn't want to show such mood. I can be mistaken, but it is my own understanding).

2. "an ever-fixed mark" VS "wandering bark"

Reading this sonnet, I imagine a summer night. I see a man who is suffering and thinking a lot about his beloved. Their relationships are very tense and complicated. That's why he is sitting and thinking about the woman and his feelings to her. He is hesitating now because he is not sure if he's doing the right thing. He is trying to give the proper definition to "LOVE" and explain this word for himself.

I pity him and I can understand him because everyone, I believe, has ever been in such a situation. Love seems to me and to the lyrical hero of the sonnet a great feeling.

The word "tempests" reminded me about last summer when I was at sea. There was one day when we were given a storm warning. The sea looked really furious that day.

3. The word "compass" reminded me about one of my classes of Geography at my school. My teacher explained us how to use compass that day.

I imagine the speaker of this sonnet.

He is an ordinary man. He has no high status in society, but he is not a poor. Probably, the man is a member of the middle class.

I think, he has some educational background. Maybe, he even he graduated from University. However, he was not very sucessful in studing though he has deep thoughts about many things. So, he is clever, he is smart, but, actually, he did not have excellent marks at school or university.

He is single. He does not have a wife or children. It is connected with the fact that he is pretty young (I think, about 24) and also he has a loved woman but she is in no hurry to connect her life with him. But he has parents who love him so much. Mother, especially.

He is suffering. He is sad. But I believe, his life will be changed soon because, in general, he is a very good man.
