The criminal justice field is continually changing, however, we have seen an increase in these changes over the past decade. States are working diligently to improve training and education when it comes to ethics, racial profiling, cultural diversity, and community relations. As improvements are being made, instructors in the criminal justice field face new challenges as they try to stay up-to-date with legal and ethical changes taking place. Further, instructors must learn to effectively teach about very controversial issues.

With the controversial issues facing the criminal justice field, students must be able to freely express their personal beliefs and opinions in a respectful manner. It is important for these instructors to encourage students to ask questions and to strive to see situations from various perspectives beyond their own (DioGuardi, 2016). It is suggested by DioGuardi that as instructors, we approach criminal justice students initially with the affective domain instead of the cognitive domain. This is the recommended approach to open the students’ minds and allow them to see various perspectives.

A brief on the Education Dive website discusses free speech issues on campuses and whether it only stifles conservative students (Paterson, 2018). Researchers have found that the amount of incidents of violations may not be as high as some may suggest and that these incidents typically involve the same speakers. Although conservative students and faculty are not the only people affected by these issues, a recent survey of college students showed that most believe that conservative views are most likely to be quieted, according to the article.

I spoke with the Reno Chief of Police Jeremy Massey, who is also an instructor in police academies around the area, about current legal and ethical issues impacting his role as an instructor.
#1: The tragic and controversial events that took place in Ferguson, Missouri, have created many changes in regards to police use of force policies and community relations. These changes in turn have impacted training and instruction requirements in these areas.
#2: Continual changes are occuring in case law involving search and seizure and the 4th amendment. Instructors must stay abreast of such changes.
#3: With the changing climate in our country where law enforcement is concerned, it is crucial that students' rights are not violated as they express their personal views, opinions, and beliefs in the classroom. All students should feel free to express themselves when controversial subjects arise.
#4: Chief Massey, as well as all other Texas peace officers and TCOLE instructors, regularly attend classes and receive mandatory training in areas such as legal updates, cultural diversity and racial profiling.
#5: Chief Massey stays current with legal issues in his field through training and the various associations he belongs to such as the Texas Police Chief's Association and the Texas Municipal League. He receives regular legal updates through these sources.
