The passage briefly mentions the poor conditions, talking about the poor quality of food and the horse meat. The bot keeps thinking he is seeing his dad but its never him and he shouts "PAPA" to random strangers and his family tells him not to shout and his sister tells him that papa is gone
- This significant passage in this part is when the boy called out "papa and 3 men with thick metal rimmed glasses looked up from their plates and said, Nan desu ka? What is it?

It then cuts to his sister who is preparing to go out and he gets curious about where the horse meat comes from. The girl says it comes from the race horses and they hunt and kill the wild mustangs to feed them

- The significant passages in this section are the sister not recognizing the boy and always going out with her friends and also the part where her mom seems to have lost hope and just sits around
- By showing Christmas it shows a more Americanized culture because Christmas is  not something the Japanese would normally celebrate. It contrasts the usual gloominess of the camps too. The more important part of this passage though is the act that the family is somewhat drifting apart.
