The teaching profession faces many different challenges. However, I feel one of the biggest challenges teachers face is being caught in the middle of issues they have no control over. The pandemic is a perfect example of this. Teachers had little control over what school would be like during the pandemic, yet they still faced backlash from the community for what local and state governments were deciding.

Assumedly, this principle could also affect the salaries of teachers.

Overall, the big challenge that the teaching profession seems to face is that it is locked at the center of social and political disputes. We see this with the war over mask mandates or the underfunding of (mostly minority) schools. Because teachers are so proximal to education, it's far easier for someone to blame them than it is to consider the often abstract damage that, say, systemic racism does to a community. Ironically, the best answer that I can think of to the issue is to educate people on the specifics.

This appreciation kind of went up as we discussed when covid hit and students had to be homeschooled, but for the most part teachers are not fully given the credit they deserve. This is reflective in the pay , the excessive amount of work they are asked to do sometimes, and much more.

The teaching profession has faced many challenges throughout history and today they are still met with unexpected challenges. One that has really caught my eye is teachers pay and the value which they are placed at. Teachers are often underpaid for the work they do. Using their own funds to buy supplies etc. Funding goes hand in hand with this issue. The value of teachers also seems to move in a wave. Our discussion in class talked about how in the covid crisis teachers were hailed as heroes, but once back in the classroom they were met with major criticism and backlash. These two challenges go hand in hand, once society places a teachers value higher, they pay and funding will increase.

The teaching profession faces the challenge of the structure of schools and policies conflicting with the true purpose of school. The school has become a machine to produce cogs in a capitalist machine children are taught to get good test scores to get into a good college to get a good job. At no point is critical thinking and development made a priority. Subsequently, these policies work against already marginalized communities, especially those in poverty. Students in poverty do not have the same resources their affluent counterparts might; these resources include access to the internet and tutors; as a result, students in that demographic don't perform as well. The success of a school is tied with the success of students in terms of testing. That success often links to the funding and resources students have access to furthering marginalization and the challenges that come with it.
