• Road users in low- and middle- income countries are more than twice as likely to die in a traffic accident than their counterparts in developed nations.
• According to the data, Malaysia registered a death rate of about 23 per 100, 000 population.
• Based on the statistic against the estimated population of 30 million Malaysians, about 7, 000 to 8, 000 people in the country die on the roads every year.
• Transport Minister, Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai revealed that a total of 7, 152 people died in road accidents in Malaysia in the year of 2016. This was an increase from the total of 6, 706 deaths that was recorded in the year 2015.
• A total of 80.6% of the road accidents are caused by human error.
• The main reason accidents happened was attributed to people driving recklessly or ignoring traffic rules especially during this festive season.

1. Based on the latest report from the Malaysian Institute of Road Safety Research (Miros), the Transport Minister said this was an increase of RM581.3mil compared with 2015.
2. Miros estimates that a death cause the country an average of RM1.2mil, RM120,000 for severe injury and RM12,000 for light injury in medical cost, productivity loss and other payouts.
3. The death rate due to road accidents rose slightly to 2.59 person for every 10,000 registered vehicles last year compared with 2.55 in 2015.
4. Liow said his ministry is planning to hrie the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to conduct an in-depth study to improve road safety in Malaysia.
5. It reported that Malaysia had a relatively high traffic crash rate per owned vehicle, likely due to the high number of motorcycles on the road.
6. Liow said his ministry had carried out many campaigns to improve road safety for motorcyclists such as encouraging them to wear reflective jackets and conducting spot checks to ensure they wear helmets.
