 The article Telehealth for expanding the reach of Early Autism training in parents studied the benefits of using telemedicine to expand the reach of early Autism training to parents. Research has shown that by starting parent involved interventions early at home has had a positive impact on behavior. Children who participate early interventions had an increase in social interaction, language ability and improved IQ. 
             The goal of the study was to examine a different approach for delivering parent applied interventions in family’s homes and supporting parent-child learning. There were many different criteria that was required to follow. They included the following: (a) children no older than 36 months of age; (b) the same parent in attendance for all video-conferencing sessions in order to monitor performance across outcome measures; (c) no intensive treatment as defined by 10 or more hours of in-home or center-based intervention during the 12 weeks of intervention; (d) a diagnosis of autism spectrum disorder completed by a licensed professional in the families’ and parental consent to share results. (e) Internet availability from their home throughout the duration of the study (although a laptop and web-camera were available should families not have this equipment) (Vismara, Young, Rogers 2012). The families selected for this study were among the middle class and all but one of the participating parents were married.
             Each week the parent and therapist planned locations in different rooms to place their laptop that would allow unhindered views of parent-child activities. During the baseline period there was no instruction or expectation of the “right way” to do an activity but rather to highlight positive or challenging behaviors and real home-life interactions to the therapist (Vismara, Young, Rogers 2012). After the baseline period parents chose ten to twelve behaviors that they wanted to teach their children across the 12-week remote coaching program. The intervention materials were placed on a DVD with video recorded examples of the therapist demonstrating each topic with children of different ages, skill level and ethnicity. Each week the parent and child participated in one-hour sessions with the therapist. The therapist went over the previous weeks intervention followed by ten minutes of parent-child play activity. This allowed the therapist to observe the parent’s delivery of the topic and if needed the therapist could coach the parent on ways to strengthen technique use during the activity. Parents then practiced the next set of new strategies in two or more play activities aimed to teach child behaviors from the list they chose. At the end of the study the baseline and follow-up were scored. In every area there was an increase in score showing the study was a success though further studies will need to recruit larger more diverse sample to examine the use of telehealth. 
             I personally think the use of telehealth to expand the reach of early autism training to parents is a great idea. Autism can make diverting from a child’s routine very difficult. Children can be easily stressed and by bringing the therapist into the home via a computer could change the game for families with autistic children. It would give parents peace of mind knowing that each week they have a set time were they fine tune their role in teaching their child under the supervision of someone who has studied the disorder. Also, it makes it so the parent can get immediate feedback on how to handle a certain behavior during an activity.
