Characteristics of Ben's Blindness

Total Blindness.
Born Blind. Ben was a premature infant and did not receive enough oxygen. This caused the blood vessels in his eyes to not grow effectively causing detached retinas. This condition is called ROP or Retinopathy of Prematurity (279-280 of book).
Since Ben is still learning how to have a daily life while being blind, he is still struggling by bumping into objects when walking. Ben has a walking stick, but also does better if he has a guide with him to help him not bump into objects. By doing this Ben is developing his echolocation skills (pg. 282 of book).
Ben is learning how to use Braille to read and as a mode of communication.

Theater Accommodations (Advice from Pellissippi)

Ben's Struggles

-Navigating crowded or unfamiliar spaces. Crowds include people in close proximity and lots of noises. This can obscure Ben's ability to use his echo-location and seeing cane.

-Accessing information. This can be extremely hard for Ben because he is not able to use regular text books and the internet. His information access is limited to things in braille and what he can hear.

-Social Inclusion and difficulty connecting with people. Ben cannot see non-verbal cues making it extremely hard for him to read people's emotions unless they verbally tell him.

-Limited independence. Ben is extremely dependent on a person (mainly due to his young age) to help him do every day tasks.

-Higher injury risk. Ben is skilled in navigating and adapting to his disability but the actual risk factor of him getting hurt is significantly higher than that of a seeing child.

Ben is outgoing and social = He has close connections with his family especially his parents.
Ben’s parents are protective of him by making sure he is able to get around safely, and is not left out by others. For his safety his parents are his guides. They make sure that Ben has people around him who will not only see his disability but see his ability.
Ben’s parents want to see him thrive. They want him to be successful in life by pursuing his dreams such as being an actor.

Parents will practice at home with him.
When he practices at school the teacher will give his parents things to work on with him at home (lines, note cards at home, teacher will let the parents know what they practiced so they can work with him at home).
Help him dress when he is getting into costume.

Ben deserves a lead role in the play.

-We cannot ignore his ABILITIES by focusing on just his disabilities. Ben is extremely talented when it comes to acting and singing. Denying him this opportunity would exclude him and make him feel left out.

-Ben is extremely hard working and determined. He deserves a lead role because he will take it seriously.

-Ben's friends are all in the play. By not allowing him to be in the play, we would be excluding him.
