The movement of people from farms to cities. In the 1800's nearly 5 million people lived in rural areas. During the Industrial Revolution people left farms for better job opportunities in the cities to work in factories. A issue of urbanization was the fact that so many people moved to cities it caused over population and cities to be crowded.

Labor Force (workers)- 1813

In the 1800's, Women/Lowell Girls moved from farms to mills towns to work in factories. They got paid lower wages to send back to families. An issue with this was, the factory operators and owners would pay women and children half of what they would pay men that only oversaw.

Farm Machines -1824

Farm machines were used in the 1800's such as horse drawn plows and rakes or horse drawn hay rakes. In 1824, John Deere invented lightweight steel plows, these inventions helped many people during this era since many things were done by hand or with horses.

Inventions and Technology-1844

In 1844, Samuel FB Morse, invented the telegraph, also known as Morse code. The telegraph made it easier to communicate from far away. This helped majorly when people from far away needed to get in touch with others.

Industry-1798

A few years before the 1800's, Eli Whitney, created interchangeable parts on muskets. Interchangeable parts then spread further, to power looms and sewing machines. Interchangeable parts helped majorly, from taking days to change parts and wasting time that could be used to make money, to taking a couple hours at most and barely slowing down production.

Daily Life in Factory Towns- 1790

In 1790, when Samuel Slater opened the first water powered mill, he brought people to come work in the mills. When workers came from farms and urbanized factory towns, the living conditions not only declined in the factories but also in the town. The factories were dusty and over crowded, and the town was polluted and the dirt roads would turn to mud when it rained.

Inventions and Technology- 1764

In 1764, James Hargreaves developed the Spinning Jenny. The Spinning Jenny spins several threads at once. This helped save tons of time when it came to spinning threads since it was normally done by hand but this was more efficient and could produce 8 threads at once compared to 1 by hand.

Farm Machines- 1847

In 1847, Cyrus McCrormick invented the mechanical reaper. This helped collect crops from the field and saved time by not only not getting crops by hand but also the machine got multiple at once.

In 1815, Francis Cabot Lowell invented the power loom and used it to make cloth efficiently by combining spinning and weaving. The original model was the loom but this was a hands-free quick version powered by water or steam power.

In 1800, only 6% of people lived in urban areas but then in 1850, 15% lived in cities. This caused severe overpopulation and diseases like Cholera that killed thousands because of the pollution, since there were no sewers, there was trash all over the street and the dirt roads would flood with mud.
