Please watch the video and refer to the stand-alone planner it connects to. Then, take a moment to explore the learning experiences connected with the stages for learning mathematics: constructing meaning CM), transferring meaning (TM) and applying with understanding (AU). What have you learned about the stages of how children learn mathematics and from the video and accompanying planner. Please record your thoughts on the Padlet.

Video and Stand Alone Planner Reflection (Lynn)

The stand alone planner really included the various stages of how students learn math. There was opportunities for constructing, transferring and applying learning. I really liked that the students created the information for their parents. This showcased their learning, was a form of assessment and included self reflection. I really liked that even though it was stand alone, it incorporated transdisciplinary learning. I liked the connections to art, music and indigenous learning. There were many opportunities for hands-on learning with manipulatives. The learning was engaging and meaningful. It was a very in-depth planner. There were many opportunities for the learner to share their thinking and to collaborate with classmates. The teacher was able to work with students to assess their understanding throughout the unit. This unit was very thorough and in-depth. There were many rich learning opportunities.

I really liked how they brought in students previous knowledge with bringing items from home to investigate. They were able to show their thinking and explore what others thought. Students had to explain their mathematical thinking throughout the unit in several different ways.
I loved the reflection pieces that were brought into this unit in order to help the teacher guide her instruction to meet the individual students needs. They had a variety of ongoing assessment and differentiated learning in order to meet everyones needs.
I want to implement the display board into my Grade 4 room next year. It is amazing how the students own questions guided their knowledge and learning.
Involving people who work in the community is a great way to show how we can take our learning and apply them to everyday tasks.

Video & Stand Alone Unit Planner Reflection (Alicia)

The stand alone unit planner and video demonstrated how the cycle of constructing meaning, transferring meaning, and applying understanding works. I liked how the unit was built, both for the students and the teachers. The inclusion of trans-disciplinary themes in the stand alone unit provided multiple means for student engagement. The emphasis on academic language and term definition was vital to student ability to apply understanding. The video showed how the flexible groupings were used to further understanding and provide differentiated support to various learners. I thought the parent night presentations were an excellent example of how students can demonstrate growth, while the conversations on being thinkers and communicators were vital means for student reflection.

The planner is an excellent resource, mapping the learning outcomes with student-friendly targets. The level of planning provides a framework for the connections students are making, including bringing items from home that have patterns and engaging guest speakers and literature samples.
Well Done!

Stand alone math IB

This was a very good example of a stand alone inquiry into a math concept. Since my school is fairly new to the PYP we still have many teachers who are overwhelmed with planning new units and "reinventing the wheel" as they call it. I wonder if these types of stand alone units are in Toddle that we can just try. It will go a long way in convincing teachers to try. The patterns unit made a lot of sense as far as students bringing in artifacts. Creating the presentation for parents was a great idea of how to show their learning.

I still wonder how we can use these as assessments. We are still working on how to construct our IB portfolios and I think this is a great addition. However, I think my district will still require us to take tests from the curriculum. I would love to try these strategies but I know other teachers at my school will say "we don't have enough time." I believe the pattern unit said it took 30 hours over 6 weeks. which is about an hour a day. How can we do both?
