The reader learns that Gardo is seen as the leader of the group. “Gardo let us go to the station”.
We also learn that Gardo is a very cautious boy. He was very unsure about the trip to the station, “what if we were being watched”. He asks more and more questions, showing his worry for being caught.
Raphael is seen as very adventurous, not worrying about what Gardo is saying. “I told him me and Rat would go alone”. It is also shown that he can be smart, knowing the police won’t give a reward. “You know they won’t pay it”.
Rat is shown to have very different personality to have been described to before. Rat is shown to take the risk of being the one opening the locker. “I best do the locker” said Rat. Some themes explored throughout this chapter include excitement- RAPHAEL AND GARDO following RAT to get the locker, the key to their discoveries.

Intensity- "If guards or even porters see you, you can get a real thrashing"- they do not want to be caught, allowing intensity to be involved.  The punctuation shows the casual personalities of the characters- through the use contractions. The use of Visual Imagery in "I could see the platform coming up" allows the reader to vividly imagine the train coming, like Raphael.

The use of auditory imagery in "I hear the sound of the door closing" and "The noise is so loud you have to shout"- these enhance the sounds of the real-life situation, and it emphasises the volume of the station sounds.
