When I was teaching English for my EFL students back in Korea, I was pushed to teach them in English only. There were English only zone in my school and we tried everything to ban their first language. However, in part of myself somewhere, I always wanted to utilize to promote the language learning especially low achieving English learners. 
To my sadness, level of English is closely related to their economic status in many non-English countries. In many cases of low achievement in English is limited to only English subject.
