Southern Plantation economy used slaves

The south had plantations that grew cash crops. These included cotton and tobacco they were grown by slaves.

The north did not grow cash crops. It did not have plantations. It did not need slaves. Slavery was abolished in the early 1800's.

Slavery in the South expanded rapidly after 1820 due to the invention of the Cotton gin. It made cotton refining and production faster and cheaper.

This increased the demand for slaves and more cotton plantations were created rapidly.
