The fight against Apartheid.

In South Africa, they split all the people into some groups, white, Indians and colored’s. White was in the first class, Indians in the second class, and at least the coloreds in the third and the last class. A lot of the colored and the Indians and a small group of the white people were angry about all this unfairness. They wanted a country where everybody could live together. The colored people were going into the white peoples place. They were organized strikes and demonstrations. But the government didn´t want change. The police began to arrest people and sometimes they killed peaceful demonstrators. The demonstrators decided to fight the government with weapons. Children also started to fight apartheid.

What does the word apartheid mean?

It means a separation from the white people, the Indians and the colored people. They can`t be with each other. The white people is the highest class, they can do whatever they want, while the Indians is in the second class and the colored are in the lowest class, they have strong rules, and if they break the rule they were punished.

The end of apartheid

In 1991, the apartheid government surrendered. Many prisoners were set free. In 1994, there were free elections and everybody could vote for a new government. They gave all South Africans equal rights no matter what colour they were.

Consequences of apartheid

Even if there have been democratic for many years now, is it still one of the poorest land in the world, and mostly of the people is black, so it´s still separated, but without racism.

Why was a system like apartheid invented?

The white people wanted to have all the power and they didn´t wanted the black people to have any influence.

New laws – a new way of living

In 1991, when the apartheid were over, there came a new president, Nelson Mandela. He was a democratic president and during his period all people in South Africa got the same political rights, Life has become better for the colored people in South Africa, but still there are many colored unemployed people living in poverty.

The Boers and the English were in a war for three years Then after a few years they found out they were stronger together and they made a new goverment and gave 87 percent of the land to the white people and only 13 percent of the land to the black people.
In 1795 the English invaded the Cape Colony and took charge from the Boers. In 1836, thousands of Boers packed everything they owned into ox wagons places to live in the north. This big adventure is known as the Great Trek. The biggest problem of the Great Trek was that the new places the Boers wanted to settle were not empty of people; they belonged to African tribes like the Basotho, the Ndebele, the Swazi and the Zulu.
Shaka was a big man who had one of the biggest army’s in Africa. The army was young and strong and they kept attacking small tribes. Shaka was feared king and he was known as a king there punished his own people. More up north the English and the Bores were taking more and more land in Africa. 1800. The Zulu was the most feared kingdom in Africa. 1820. Shaka had conquered all other Africa nations. 1828. his half-brother killed him 1838. the Boers tried to take some land from the Zulu. 1879. English tried to defeat the Zulus. 1887. the English and the Zulus fought at lot of battles and the English won same year.
Many years before the Europeans and the black Africans came to South Africa, there were two kinds off people, the Khoi and the Sand. The Khoi were cattle herders and the Sand were hunter-gatheres. They kept away from each other. The San painted stories about themselves on cave walls.
Many pictures show how important it was to dance. Dancing made The Khoi or a San tribe feel like a family. Today, only a few of the San have survived. They live in the Kalahari Desert. All the Khoi have died.

In South Africa theres a lot of poor people who lives in townships. It´s bad to live there, but I have seen some more worse. In Kenya I saw a slum area. Then you can say that the people who live in townships almost live in luxury. I know that rich people thinks that the people who lives in the townships have it bad, but it is actually really nice to be with some of them. They want to us how they live and they are really kind.
