At the first line of the novel, Holden proclaims: "If you really want to hear about it, the first thing you'l probably want to know is where I was born, and what my lousy childhood was like, and how my parents were occupied and all before they had me, and all that David Copperfield kind of crap, but I don't feel like going into it, if you want to know the truth" (3). What literary device is in this quote? Who is David Copperfild and why would holden bring this up? by Vannah Scarborough

David Copperfield is Charles Dickens 8th novel. The novel's full title is The Personal History, Adventures, Experience and Observation of David Copperfield the Younger of Blunderstone Rookery. It was first published in 1850. I think Holden is alluding to this book because according to the Title of Dickens book, Holden's is very similar in that he talks about his experiences and history. Holden sees those kinds of details as irrelevent yet still seemingly unconsciously goes into his own personal anecdotes he goes as far as to discuss the tragic death of his brother.

The literary device used in this quote is allusion. David Copperfield is being alluded in this quote. David Copperfield is a character in one of Charles Dickens novels, David Copperfield. In this novel, it is about a guy named David Copperfield and it was told about his experiences. Also David Copperfield had a difficult childhood. The main reason why Holden brings up David Copperfield was because the novel was a boring and long book of his experiences which Holden is trying saying he isn't going to bore us like David Copperfield.

His parents seemed to neglect him in the story and it sounded like he had a tough life. Holden brought this up because he’s about to tell the story of his life and the things he went through so it’s actually a really good allusion. Holden is the narrator of the book so I feel like if people were to read the first sentence of the book they would kind of be turned down because the narrator is a teenage boy. He said he didn’t wanna bring it up because he things David copper field didn’t do a good job explaining his life.
