New Orleans is renowned for its annual Mardi Gras festival, held between January 6th and the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday. January 6th marks the start of the Epiphany holiday. The Epiphany commemorates the Three Wise Men, who brought gifts to the newly born Jesus Christ in Catholic traditions. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent, a 40-day period of fasting and prayers. The days between these two important religious festivals evolved into Mardi Gras, the French translation of Fat Tuesday. People gorged on fatty foods in preparation for the restrictions imposed after Lent.
