Sacraments - Luther believed the sacraments were valid only as aids to faith thus giving grace to those who participate in them. The Catholic Church claims seven sacraments, the Lutheran Church two: baptism and the Lord's Supper.


Worship - As to the manner of worship, Luther chose to retain altars and vestments and prepare an order of liturgical service, but with the understanding that no church was bound to follow any set order. As a result, there is today no uniform liturgy belonging to all branches of the Lutheran body. However, an important place is given to preaching and congregational singing.

Traditionally, Lutherans hold the Bible of the old and new testaments to be the only divinely inspired book, the only source of divinely revealed knowledge, and the only norm for Christian teaching.scripture alone is the formal principle of the faith, the final authority for all matters of faith and morals because of its inspiration, authority, clarity, efficacy, and sufficiency. The authority of the Scriptures has been challenged during the history of Lutheranism. Martin Luther taught that the Bible was the written Word of God, and the only reliable guide for faith and practice.

During its early history, Christianity grew from a 1st century jew following to a religion that existed across the entire Greco-Roman world and beyond.


Early Christianity may be divided into 2 distinct phases: the apostolic period, when the first apostles were alive and led the Church, and the post apostolic period, when an early structure developed, and persecution was periodically intense. The Roman persecution of christians ended in AD 324 when Constantine the great, decreed tolerance for the religion. He then called the First council of Nicaea in AD 325, beginning of the period of the First seven Ecumenical Councils.
