My favorite memory of elementary music is probably playing my first instrument in 5th grade, it was unfortunately a flute (I have asthma). My worst memory is my music class in 3rd grade where our teacher would call us dummies for not being able to identify different musical families. He may have been fired a year after.
-DCC

My favorite memory of elementary school music was playing the recorder, it was my first personal instrument I got to take home, it was the most exciting instrument to play and show off to my mom. My least favorite memory of music, I guess was learning the same song over and over again. I always looked forward to singing, but some songs were so repetitive. Til this day I can probably sing all 50 states.
-VG

My favorite memory of elementary school music was when we would get in a circle and sing songs. While learning the songs we would also either learn a dance or a game. I enjoyed learning new dances the most because the moves they would teach were creative and funny, but at the same time we were all having fun. My least favorite memory was playing the recorder because I wasn't good at it, and till this day its still hard but I see improvement when I practice on my own time.

-J.B

By the time I had reached my elementary school music class, I had already been doing piano lessons for a couple years. At one point, the teacher had asked us to write out a few bars of music. While everyone was still on their first or second bar, I was blasting through to my 10th bar! After she made us turn in our work, she asked “ok, who’s the piano player here?”. It felt good. My least favorite moment was the few weeks we had with the violin... we sounded pretty terrible, and even though all we could do was an out of tune hot crossed buns, we had a “concert” anyway.
ZJ

My favorite memory of elementary school music was when we would all get in one big circle as a class and the teacher would pass out instruments such as the triangle, small hand drums, the maracas, etc. It was fun because we got to see what they sound like and perform as a whole class! It was a really fun time from what I can remember! My least favorite memory was learning how to read music because it was really hard for me It just didn't come naturally to me and still to this day its really hard for me. But overall elementary music was super fun!

-SM

When I was in 6th grade, I was given the choice to learn how to play the violin or not. I took the offer, and it was fun learning to play! However, after 6t grade I didn't keep up the lessons, because they weren't available anymore. I also really loved any time my classmates and I had to sing, because I love singing. Sometimes my school would put on the these winter/holiday concerts. I felt like I was always late. I'd show up and be super nervous, because I was missed parts or barely made it. It sort of added unnecessary stress to something that should have been fun.
-TS

I thought it was the coolest thing to learn how to play an instrument and play it together with my classmates and friends. By the end of our unit the entire 4th grade class put on a concert for all of our families.
My least favorite memory is when my music teacher would have each student sing to her individually as the class was playing the music. No other students could hear the singing, but it was overwhelming as a first grader to sing to my teacher.
-SDC

We performed the song for the entire school and our parents and it was a blast. My least favorite memory of elementary music was when we had to sing in front of the class all by ourselves. It was very scary getting in front of the whole class to sing. Over all, most of my experiences with elementary music were positive ones.
-C.S.

My favorite memory of elementary music was learning how to play the flute in our 5th grade band. At the end of the year we got to merge with two other 5th grade bands and together went on field trips to play "concerts" at local schools for the younger kids. My least favorite memory came after that year when I realized I didn't actually have any interest in being a "band kid" in middle school, so I basically quit playing the flute and my dad was upset that he wasted money on buying my instrument instead of renting.

On the other hand, whenever the teachers wanted us as students to sing out loud individually, that I didn’t like because all attention is on me which I don’t usually like. If we sang a song together or listened to music I really enjoyed it. In addition, listening to instruments play is great but having to learn to use and play certain instruments can be very tough. For example, playing the trumpet is exhausting; I would much rather learn to play something lighter in regards to weight and less exhausting to use.

- MM

My favorite memory about music classWhen I was eight years old, I got into the school choir. We went to different competitions around the state and luckily, we won most of them. The trips were fun. Staying in hotels, spending time with my mom and trying different foods while I was doing something that I loved felt great. I truly enjoyed rehearsal time and competing. It did not matter if we lose or win. I was thankful that I was doing something exciting for me. I have always like to listen to music. I am constantly singing during my whole day. My sister makes fun of me because of that. I love music and I am glad that music classes exist. My least favorite memory about music class.I used to get really stressed out about learning how to play different instruments. I did not like when It was my turn to play them in front of everybody. I would usually get a good grade, but the whole thing caused me to feel anxious. My music teacher was very nice and patient. I remember that I forgot my recorder on the day that I had to play it by myself which happened to be the day of the United Nations. I found that out when I was already at school, so I could not communicate with my parents. I explained to my teacher what had happened, and she immediately told me to calm down. My older sister happened to have hers with her since she rarely cleaned her backpack, so I got to borrow it. I did good, but I still remember being all dress up and in the line for presenting and without a recorder. I still do not like to remember that day.

Music
My favorite memory about elementary music was choir and musicals. I went to a private and public school and each spring and winter our school would have musicals. I always loved these because we were able to audition and get the music sheets before our auditions. We also would practice weekly with the whole school from K-6 so it was a great experience to meet everyone in the school and see the talent. My not so favorite memeory was going to public school we didn’t really have a music class. We would meet with the instrctour and learn about notes but we never got to play anything.
NS

My least favorite memory is when I had to sing in front of the whole grade and I was super off key.
-C.S

My favorite memory of elementary school music was our annual concerts. We would get to sing and play the recorder, and I remember everyone really looked forward to it each year. It was so fun getting to preform what my classmates and I had been practicing in front of our friends and family. My least favorite memory was having preform alone in front of my class. I messed up one time, and I got extremely embarrassed.
-MP

My favorite memory from my elementary school music class was my teacher. I remember her being so friendly and so caring that it excited me to go to her classroom. What I did not enjoy was learning how to read music. I found it really difficult and struggled learning how to learn the recorder.

My favorite memory of elementary music was playing the violin in 5th grade. I really enjoyed playing the violin and I would go home to play for my family. My least favorite memory would be singing because I don’t like to sing in front of an audience.

My favorite elementary school music memory was when I got a chance to play the flute at around 4th-5th grade. We had a class full of people who played together and in small short duets as well. I never got a chance to pursue this instrument as much as I wanted to. My least favorite elementary music memory was a lot of the singing that we had to do often in class as well. Sometimes we were asked to sing for everyone by standing up and just doing a simple children's song, but it was horrifying at the time to perform, and even today it still is horrifying to perform in front of people, so it goes a long way!

-C.M

I remember we had a holiday concert for all our parents in the second grade, and my music teacher let me be the person to ring a bell in the middle of one of the songs. It might be lame, but that is my favorite memory of elementary music because I was kind of a shy kid, and I was not super comfortable being up on stage, but being able to ring the bell made me excited to be there the whole concert. So much so that I forgot about my nerves and I had a lot of fun.

My least favorite memory of elementary music was being forced to sing in front of my whole class by myself, because a few of us were misbehaving. I hated having to do anything in front of the class, let alone sing. I remember it really making music class feel like a punishment.

Katie Betts
