Postcards ♥ WEEK 1

Another great game that we played in our Drama class was 'postcards'. It required us to use our bodies to create shapes and levels that helped describe a setting or painted a picture based on a location. At the beginning, we were all in a circle together and the prompt idea was 'a postcard from Perth'. This was a nervracking, yet comofortable task because we were familiar with Perth but scared to be the first ones to go into the circle and act out something that represented Perth. Everyone slowly began feeding off each others ideas and before you knew it, there was a lovely postcard that very accuratley represented Perth. There were surfers, a beach, the Bell Tower, Optus Stadium and a variety of other destinations/people/objects that made up our home (Perth).

This game was rather tricky because it required you to think on the spot, but was brilliant at getting you out of your comfort zone and really acting out something/someone you're not. I believe this emphasises the need to ensure that you are self-aware when placing yourself in a certain spot to paint the scence of the postcard, but also to have the self-confidence to initiate walking into the circle in the first place.

Rather, I feel that this excerise would engage children dramatically and slowly push them out of their "comfort zones". As stated in bjclearn.org (website link attached), getting anyone out of their comofort zone has tremendous benefits. These postivie respones include becoming more porductive because when we are too comofortable, our motivational drive can decrease (bjclearn.org). It also assists students at dealing better with change and also gaining more confidence in themselves that they can handle an uncomfortable situation (bjclearn.org).

Three or four pictures to tell the story of... ♥ WEEK 1

This task was rather nerveracking again. We were broken up into a few groups with three to four students. We were required to tell a story of our chosen nursery rhyme. We all decided that Humpty Dumpty would be the easiest...and so did half the class since that's the nursery rhyme that most of the performance (at the end) consisted of.

As we were attempting to re-create the story, we really had to focus on the placement of our bodies and how we could potray certain props and characters properly. In our story, we had two memebers of the group as the bench that Humpty sat on. We also had nominated who was Humpty Dumpty, and worked out how we would all have to switch from our creation of the 'wall' to the Kings horses and Kings men to make sure the story made sense. We were also only allowed to use three to four 'pictures' to tell the story, which made it that little bit harder.

This task took a lot of co-opertation and self-awareness. It also pushed us all out of our comofort zones as we had to perform in front of the class, and made a nursery rhyme that we all would probably consider a bit boring, a lot of fun!

Before the commencement of our class, I was extremely nervous about what types of tasks we would have to do. Considering it was a Drama based unit, I figured we'd be required to step fairly out of our comoft zones, but I knew this would make us fantastic teachers in the future.

Our lecturer, Christine, made us feel very warm and welcome. She wasn't overally forceful about us participating if we didn't want to, but we felt like we could because of how positive she made the class. This made it a lot easier for us to join into the upcoming games, and tackled any unwanted nerves!

We began the class by sitting in a circle and playing a name game. This game was rather scary as it required us to speak in front of the whole class. I was terrified inside! But I thought that if everyone else can do it, so can I! So we started playing and at first we just had to introduce ourselves. Christine decided to make it a bit more tricky and get all of us to introduce our peers who were sittig both left and right to us. This was a bit difficult because we had to remember our own names and someone else's! But we all did it and it was a great ice-breaker. I got to know my peers without having to awkwardly initite conversation.

This game really emphasied the need to communicate with your partners and to have good concentration so you could rememeber both their names whilst tackling those nerves.

I feel as if children will really enjoy this game, especially if they're in a new class and don't know anybody, as it allows them to get to know everyones name without it being super nerveracking. It will also help build up their self-confidence and co-operation skills.

Today's lesson was rather interesting. We learnt a lot about inanimate objects and imaginary things. We also got taught how to turn an object into something completley unrelated to what that object was. For example, we passed around a newspaper and had to create an object using it. So we went around the circle and everyone started creating their objects... there were phones, plates, shoes, it was great!

We then continued to create a an imaginary box and used snap and lock technique. It was actually quite difficult to form a shape and not change the shape of it! I tried to remember the techniques used in the videos provided in this weeks file..but it looked easier than it was!

Story telling/speeches- Week 4 ♥

Today was probably the most stressful lesson of the semster! Everyones nerves were high because we had our speeches today! I was super nervous because this was the first time I was going to speak in front of a class in about 3 years. I was also glad that I was doing it and was getting outside my comofrt zone!

To begin, we did some activities that were based around story telling and improvisation. We went around the circle and Christine handed out a spoon that you had to be holding to speak. The spoon went around thr circle and we had to re-tell the nursery rhyme The Three Little Pigs. It was scary to have to re-sight a story that I hadn't heard for years. I stumbled a bit when it came to my turn as I was super nervous, but I got through it.

We then had to create our own story as a class. There were some excellent scenes that were being created by my peers. Like ones about a fire breathing dragon and it turning into a gecko...super random!
I did stumble during this task and felt embarrased when I couldn't think of what to say next...

After this had happened I became very introverted and didn't want to speak much. Now I was super stressed for my speech in case I mucked it up.

So we all got ready for our speeches now and it was very nerve-racking. My partner and I were called upon somewhere in the middle to do our speech and it was super scary...having all your peers eyes on you! But we did it and got through it.

I can't express how happy I was that we actually did it! My partner and I put in a lot of effort into that speech and I hope it showed!

Today's lesson was rather nerve-racking. We were really pushed out of our comofot zones. Firstly, we played a game where the class was divided in half and two even teams were created. We began to play the game ans the game was called SHAZZAM! To simplify it, it was like a humanly paper, sciccors, rock, except instead of thoese objects, their were giants, knights and wizards. So the giants beat the knights, the knights beat the wizards and the wizards beat the giants.

So our two seperate teams huddled and got ready to decide who we were going to be first. Im not too sure who we picked but our team ended up winning!!

We then had to sit in a circle and play an improve game called thank you for the...
It was a game where the person net to you would mime something and you'd have to interpret what it was and say "thank you for the (object)". I was so extremely anxious at this point that I had to step outside.

By the time I came back into class, most of the improve was over.We then continued with an improvised drama story called "The Treasure Box". This was probably my favourite drama task so far. Our tutor would use certain props like a hat or a scarf to represent a character. She wore a scarf a began to tell a story about a treasure box, it was so fascinating. There were so many different objects that she describe that were used to find the treasure such as a magic compas, some alexa drink (which gave you energy), the magic dust and many more.

During our week 8 lesson we focussed on the choreographic process in dance and learning through dance.

Firstly we had to prepare our birthday dance based on the number of our birthdate and the moves that were next to those numbers. It was quite tricky to rememeber but I got to perform it in the end...even though I was relying heavily on the guide. We were then asked to draw out our names. We were allowed to use different body parts for differernt letters which was super engaging! I used my whole body to create the letter A and then my finger to create the letter N and so forth. We did this for the first four letters of our name. We then combined it with out birthdate dance. This was difficult!

We were then asked to break off into pairs and combine both our dances and our partners dances together. This was the trickiest part of the lesson in my opinion. Regardless of the amount of run throughs my partner and I had, we just couldn't memorise the dance! We then performed it to the best of our ability... it didn't go to well...

Our lecturer asked us how we could make this more kid friendly or easier for the kids to grasp. She explained that the dances could be a project, rather than a task done quickly in a class lesson. This is becasue the kids would need more time to memorise the dance. It could even be an assembly item or something that is performed on parent-teacher night.

We got to use the Drama room and the space we will be using on the day of our performance. I felt like my group and I made grreat use of the time as we had our performance planned out well! We also really tried to get into character and I found that our acting really brought our performance to life!

I am still very nervous for our performance in week 13 but I feel more at ease now that we have practiced as a group!

This week our learning was all online. We also had a Media Arts quiz that we had to complete by sunday, which I did the night it came out.

For our online week, we had to create a story board using some pictures we took from various different angles. My picture was of my plant in the hallway. I really expanded on this and created a whole story about a mailman who was dropping off a delivery and put it next to th plant! It was difficult coming up with a story about a plant but now that I am writing this, I realise that I could have created a story about a mystical forrest! Although, Im not really that good of a drawer...

I enjoyed this week being online, although, I also enjoy being in class with my friends.
