Week 1: Diary Entry - Feedback and my idea of success. (LO2, LO7)

Diary Entry 1

I mentioned most in my video, but I just wanted to elaborate further here.

So I got my feedback this week, all in all I was happy and thought the grade was fair, I was over the moon with the constructive criticism as it really gives me something to push towards this term and my 3 main stand outs to work on are the below.

Production - one of the main downfalls from my WB01 track was the mixing and mastering side of things, so I have bought myself 2 books on production for beginners which I have been working on alongside the canvas content, the songs we’ve been working on in class and have been saving them and bringing them home. My aim is to mix one set of stems a week to really help me master this process but also to use my classes with Bessie for anything that I don’t feel that I have really taken on board. I will go in more depth as I try new things on what I feel works and what doesn’t.

Melody of my songs - although a lot of the feedback on my song was positive it was mentioned that the melody line on my submission was just following chords, and this is something I will be working hard on making better, I have already went through all of my notes from last term and taken points, I will be working on this by admin to write at least one son a week using the tips were learning in Steve hillier classes and using the collaboration efforts in Tuesdays Spark lessons to put these to practice as well as writing as much as possible at home. I will be revisiting all of last terms work along with this terms learnings and take more from it now knowing what I was missing.

Making sure my vocals are attacked with conviction. I want to work on emphasising these on certain parts and intentionally singing everything, knowing the effect I’m adding to the lyrics.

So this term I really want to show that I can (and will!) do better and build on what I’ve learnt so far, in this module success to me would be to obtain at least 70 marks across my WB03 submission, see this as being achieved along with hard work which I am ready to put in and make happen. I want a song that would show my competence as above average in writing and production. My main target will be to improve on production, my aim is to be able to write, record and mix a track that would be a strong demo for a band. A good starting point for my production skills as I eventually want to be able to make this radio quality, but being realistic knowing that I only have until April for this submission I would like to write and record a song that will score 70 or above over all. I will be doing in class work as well as classes.

I want to show a god versitility in my voice and performance through songwriting with writing songs that show completely different styles of my range of skills, for example for the live song I want an energetic song pushing onto the punk spectrum, but completely sounding like something that would still fit my band. By this I mean a song that could really pick up a crowd, lyrics that would really set a scene to the place and characters involved as I am aiming to use something from more external factors of something or a situation I have been in and seen. I want to involve some striking lyrics, a good riff/motif/hook and a real ear worm of a chorus that is short, sharp and to the point so that in a live environment it would be easy for a crowd to sing back to me. To contrast this for my DAW submission I want to write something more personal and look inward. I want to try something that I don’t usually do in songwriting as its usually for a band and really strip back and write something intimate and starting off just based around my voice and an acoustic guitar and really build on this idea bringing in production skills of MIDI orchestras maybe and use my skills from WB01 which maybe I didn’t take full advantage of, I would ultimately still add and layer lots of instruments in on this and hopefully make it big, but in a different way to usually as its usually writing for my band. I feel really excited for this and will be starting to evidence this ASAP.

LO7 because of me communicating to the band how I would like it performed, the style and how to play it.

I changed the chorus from B, E, A four times over, but I decided to change it to B, E, G, B, E, A - just twice, so that it takes longer to resolve, adding some extra tension builds up to the feel of the chorus, but then gives a good feeling on resolving on the A.

Credit;
Drums - Alex Searle
Bass - Joseph Butler
Guitar - Jude James

The enunciation of the lyrics is somewhat unclear at times, as well as the accent which seems emulated rather than a conscious stylistic choice. This could be considered before summative.

DAW - Contrast is immediate and successfully achieved within the writing and choice of instrumentation etc. The vocals are at points uncontrolled, with the sense of 'pushing' at the start phases. The enunciation is somewhat more unclear within this recording than in the Live video. This could be further considered by speaking a phrase several times, noting how it feels, how you 'attack' the vowels etc and trying to 'attack' the phrase in exactly the same way as when you spoke the phrase.

SMART Targets:

-To get better at production on the back of last terms feedback: I Plan on achieving this through working hard at lessons and using some self study books.

-To work on my vocal delivery in contrasting songs to show contrast in my vocals: Hopefully by getting a 1-2-1 set up with a vocal expert as well self study.

So during development week I added on a breakdown to the song to really just try to add a new part and really try to expand where the song was going. I used a C chord, then moved it up to 5th then 8th fret the same chord with the open strings still being played and I felt this sound really suited the feel of the song and it floats as we sometimes maybe feel we do when we're overly tired.

LIVE Track: Vice City - Stuff to work on: Vocal clean-up/ maybe go harder on some of these vocals like shouting or something ITS VICE CITY BIIIITCH. Theres some space in the instrumental part for possibly something extra like a guitar solo, it kinda moves at its own pace and slows the thing down which is nice but it might be worth looking at pumping all the way through and shreddin it
good things - really out there lyrics that hook well and grip people passing by, you can imagine people walking outside a club and hearing this and turning their head to check it out due to this. Constructed incredibly well with a neat layout that is hard to fail

DAW Track: cant sleep - Stuff to work on: Might be worth singing this slightly differently as its a bit more of a slower and more meaningful sounding song, it's a bit too punky in the vocals personally. There's a lot of lyrics in verses. This is more personal preference but I would make this song 3:30 and maybe cut one of the verses due to personal overload. I find it a particularly difficult thing to care about lyrics when it gets to verse 3 so shortening it I think would do well if possible. (I want to reiterate again that this may just be me specifically).
good things - Awesome guitar chord progression and sound. Really works well and creates a really unique vibe for your content and range. It builds a melodic empowerment which the keys also really work well with when they chime in. Looking at automating reverb on the guitar may make it a super unique thing that brings it closer and further slightly could make a 'rocking someone to sleep' kinda feel. The second point is once again very catchy lyricism with some of the hooks and a good story to it. The ending of the song in particular is a fantastic finish that still has audiences engaged

Contrastwise - It's clear to see that the main contrast is in your own vocal performance and the tempo of the song. This could be further exaggerated with my first 'work on' comment for Cant sleep. The use of newer instruments is a good practice especially for the DAW constructed song. The layouts seem rather similar but at the same time feel completely renegaded by the difference in their performance.

Credit:
Harry Cooper

DAW Track: For my DAW track I would like to incorporate some strings based around my 'simplistic' guitar based track, maybe use some really cool effects on the vocals. I will be using The Last Shadow Puppets 'This is What You've Come to Expect' (Turner, A and Kane, M. 2016) as inspiration due to the nature of it being indie pop, but smoother, based around string sections the majority of the time and uses some really cool effects.

I would also like to use the Courteeners 'Hanging Off Your Cloud'. This song is largely acoustic guitar and strings based, with vocals that really suit the feel of the lyric style of the song (Fray, 2020.).

Live Track: I will be listening again to 'Dogrel' By Fontaines D.C. (Fontaines D.C., 2019), I have chosen this album for reference as the band play some really cool sharp guitar parts, quick punk based. I really like the songwriting style of the singer a lot of the time writing in third person looking and giving a really good picture in your head, in a matter of minimalistic descriptions. Also the way the vocalist is almost talking at parts, then exploding into a big chorus. The use of repetition and bringing riffs and motifs back throughout to give familiarity.
