When Douglas comes into her possesion, she warmly takes him in as her own; however, "Slavery soon proved its ability to divest her of these heavenly qualities. Under its influence, the tender heart became stone and the lamblike disposition gave way to one of tiger-like fierceness" (Douglas 40).

After being put to unbearable work for months by Edward Covey, an infamous slave breaker, Douglas's will to persist is finally destroyed. He gives up on his own aspirations. The torturous and demeaning labors of slavery drove a man into a spirit-less body, one he compares to an animal. The personification and antithesis Douglas utilizes throughout his description of his state emphasizes how much slavery dehumanizes slaves. He compares the once lively qualities he exhibited to the destruction his situation has done to them.

Douglas offers this shocking antithesis of a women, whom he claims once had providential qualities, that turns cold after being given the position of master to a slave. Even though slave owners are in power, holding another person as property afflicts their own nature.
