According to their tradition, only chiefs of local tribes have local jurisdiction. And like their lives and cultures, First Nations and Inuit legal systems across Canada were never extinguished, even where treaties were signed. The Supreme Court of Canada has declared these legal systems, unique to each nation, never stopped being valid just because Europeans settled here.
This reality has meant continual clashes between Canadian governments who wish to mine natural resources for profit and jobs, and Indigenous people asserting their right to a seat at the table where decisions are made over how lands and resources are used.

Why don’t the Canadian Government do more for the Indigenous communities in Canada? Ever since the first European settlers (French and British) arrived in Canada (historically occupied by FNMI people), they attempted to take over the land. Then the Canadian Government tried to do the same thing but that’s when their actions started to come to light, and non-FNMI Canadians started to wake up and realize that the people who they had been trusting to make decisions for them in a society (Canadian Government), aren’t worth to be trusted. I really hope now Justin Trudeau will impact the FNMI community in a positively significant way. -Munira I.

The reason as to why Wet’suwet’en protests are happening is because their land is being invaded by these plans to build a pipeline.
