Spring 1: What was so significant about the Black Death?

Then we will explore the importance of the Christian Church for medieval people in England.

Then we will investigate what the Black Death was, why it spread so quickly and killed so many. We will learn how medieval people explained it and how it changed the lives of those who survived.
We will finish by constructing our own persuasive essays which argue why the Black Death was such a significant historical event.

We also explore and debate conflicting interpretations of the the British Empire.

In the summer term we will learn about the significance of the Suffragettes and their campaign for female suffrage.

A the end of the summer term we will explore the diverse experiences of those who moved to Britain from the Caribbean to Britain after WW2.

Black History Month at Northstowe

Throughout October we explicitly celebrate the achievements and contributions of the black community in the UK.

In History, students have been given a research challenge to research and produce a presentation on a Black British Icon past or present.

Students can find out more by looking at the instructions on Satchel One which include a detailed list of starting points for websites. Their presentation can take any form from poetry and art to a written essay. The deadline is Tuesday 1st November.

Mrs Wright, our librarian, has produced a timeline display in our library which includes information on significant Black authors, as well as a fabulous display of books written by contemporary Black authors.

If students and parents would like to learn more about Black British History then David Olusoga’s TV series ‘Black and British’ is available on BBC i Player. Olusoga has also produced a version of his book for young people which includes an illustrated version.

The BBC also has a very interesting collection of short films for young people which explore the experiences and contributions of people from communities across the UK, and celebrate the rich contribution of the black community to the culture, society and economy of the UK. Click here.

Holocaust Memorial Day 2022

We will explore the structure of Elizabethan society in 1558. We will find out about relations between Elizabeth and Mary Queen of Scots, and the threat posed by Mary’s arrival in England in 1568.

Unit 2: Challenge to Elizabeth at home and abroad 1569-88
We will find out about the plots against Elizabeth and how these were defeated. We will explore why Mary Queen of Scots was executed. We will learn about the worsening of Anglo-Spanish relations resulting in the attempted invasion by the Spanish Armada in 1588.

Unit 3: Elizabethan society in the Age of Exploration 1558-88
We will first learn about education and leisure in Elizabethan society. Next we will then explore the challenges of poverty and attitudes towards the poor. We will then find out about the growth of exploration in the Americas including the roles of Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh. We will explore the early attempts of colonisation in Virginia and the reasons why it failed.
