Lithotripsy is a non-invasive procedure that involves sending shockwaves from one focus of an ellipse towards a gallstone(positioned at the other focus). The elliptical shape is important for ensuring that all of the waves hit the gallstone in order for it to break apart and dissolve. This satisfies the strand goals because it is a creative and innovative way to implement mathematical concepts out of the Cartesian Plane and into the real world to help others.

The human eye socket (orbit) has an elliptical shape. This shape is crucial because it provides a stable yet flexible cavity for the eyeball, muscles, and nerves. The ellipse distributes pressure evenly around the eye, helping protect it from injuries and allowing smooth eye movement. I chose this example because it connects directly to anatomy, biotechnology (designing prosthetic eyes or surgical implants), and design thinking (medical imaging and reconstructive surgery). The elliptical form is not just aesthetic, it plays a key role in ensuring the eye functions properly within its socket.

An MRI machine is used in hospitals to see inside the human body. The tunnel where the patient goes in is shaped like an ellipse, which looks like an oval. This shape gives more room so patients feel more comfortable. It also helps save space and energy while still taking clear pictures. That’s why the ellipse design is useful in biotechnology, green engineering, and design thinking.

The eye orbit, or the bony socket where the eye sits, is shaped like an ellipse. This elliptical shape protects the eye while giving enough space for the muscles, nerves, and blood vessels around it. Because it is not perfectly round, the orbit also supports a wider field of vision and better eye movement. In biotechnology, this shape is important for surgeries and prosthetic eye designs. It also inspires engineers and designers to create ergonomic eyewear and devices that fit the natural human anatomy.

Our eyes are one of the most important organs in our human body. The eyes are responsible for capturing light and sending signals to our brain on what our body encounters. Many would think that our eyes are shaped like a circle, but it’s actually not. This subtle detail is crucial because it affects how light bends and focuses on the retina, influencing how clearly we see. This shape ensures that light rays entering from different angles converge properly at the back of the eye. A change in shape will lead to other human defects like astigmatism.

STEM GOAL: Biotechnology

In eye care, biotechnology uses the elliptical concept to design contact lenses, LASIK surgery methods, and artificial lenses that correct vision problems caused by irregular corneal shapes.

Muscles are elliptically shaped, so the implants have to be ellipses to maintain a natural look. It would also spread pressure evenly across muscle tissues, reducing the risk of shifting and/or necrosis. Ellipse-based designs make the prosthetics more bio-compatible. Less filler would be utilized when in this certain shape. It encourages creative thinking to make it both look aesthetically pleasing and functional for movement.

Montemar and Mape
