Nate and Makayla - Allusion

One of the many allusions in "Flowers For Algernon" is the story of Adam and Eve extracted from the Holy Bible. Fanny Girden, a co-worker of Charlie Gordon, was superstitious about Charlie's spontaneous spike in intelligence. "She stared down at her work and I turned to leave. Without looking at me, she said: It was evil when Eve listened to the snake and ate from the tree of knowledge." (Keyes 107). This is allusion because Fanny is comparing the story of Adam and Eve which is from a very famous work, The Holy Bible. This is because Charlie has artificially boosted his intelligence and Fanny thinks, like Eve, he made a mistake and this could lead to something bad. This is also foreshadowing to his inevitable regression. Clearly, this excerpt from the Bible is allusion used to compare the situations of Eve and Charlie.

Theme is the overall message in the story. The theme in "Flower for Algernon," is nothing last forever so enjoy it when you can. According to the text, " If you ever reed this Miss Kinnian dont be sorry for me Im glad i got a second chance to be smart becaus I lerned a lot of things that I never new were in this world and Im grateful that I saw it all for a littel bit. I dont know why Im dumb agen or what I did wrong maybe its becaus i dint try hard enuff" (Keyes 124). This quote explains that Charlie was dumb and he became smart. Now he is dumb again. Charlie remembers that he was smart. He also remembers that as he was regressing he cherished his intelligence. Therefor, this quote explains that Charlie cherished his intelligence because he knew he would lose it.

Dr. Strauss had an external conflict with Dr. Nemur. As stated in the text, "Dr. Nemur said that Dr. Strauss was nothing but an opportunist who was trying to ride to glory on his coattails... I remember hearing Burt say that Dr. Nemur had a shrew of a wife who was pushing him all the time to get things published so that he could be famous" (Keyes 104). This evidence proves that Dr. Nemur and Dr. Strauss have an external conflict because they argue a lot, Dr Nemur takes all the credit because he wants to make his wife happy, but Dr Strauss did the operation on Charlie. Because they argue a lot they don't get along well. Therefore, this causes an external conflict.

Symbolism - Stephen and Destiny

Symbolism is when an author in a story uses a specific object that may be tangible and is later used to explain/represent something important within the story. Our symbol that we chose is the flowers that Charlie used to place on Algernon's grave. In the story it states, "Please if you get a chanse put some flowers on Algernon's grave in the bak yard. . . ." (Keyes 124) The flowers represented growth within both Algernon and Charlie. They started out not very smart and "young", like a sapling of a flower. Yet, when they got surgery on their brains, they started to sprout and grow with knowledge and peaked soon enough, reaching their fully-blossomed point. When they began regressing, they began to wilt and die like a flower does when it doesn't receive water or even enough nutrients like sunlight. By the end, Algernon had wilted and passed like every flower does, which was, unfortunately, Charlies' case, too.

A dynamic character is a character who changes throughout the story. Two characters who represent a dynamic character are Charlie Gordon and Algernon from Flowers from Algernon by Daniel Keys. According to the text, " If you volenteer for this experament you mite get smart" (KEYS 87).This shows that Charlie started off vacuous. Charlie then has a increase in intelligence. In the text, "I was shocked to learn that the only ancient languages he could read were Latin, Greek, and Hebrew" (KEYS 109)This shows that Charlie had changed throughout the story. Algernon also experiences change in the story due to the experiment to boost his intelligence. Algernon was an intelligent specimen when Charlie met him. For example, the scientists would make Algernon solve a lock puzzle to get his food. After Algernon passed away from rapid regression, Charlie had the same kind of regression. So, Charlie Gordon and Algernon are two dynamic characters from Flowers for Algernon by Daniel Keys.

Text Structure is how the information in a text is organized. The text used in Flowers For Algernon. is to inform people about the choices you make in life. AS stated in the article, " Them changes. I don't know. You used to be a good, dependable, ordinary man- not to bright maybe, but honest. Who knows what you done to yourself to get so smart all of a sudden. Like everybody around here's been saying, Charlie, it's not right. " The quote provided shows that people can change in many ways, both good and bad. The meaning inferred from the text, tells that you should be yourself, and not change not matter who tells you that you should.

Theme is a message about the nature of life or humans in a work of fiction. One example is when Mrs. Fanny Girden talks about why she did not vote for Charlie to get fired. She says, " It was evil when Eve listened to the snake and ate from the tree of knowledge... If not for that, none of us would have to grow old and sick and die" (Keyes 107). The theme for this sentence is, having having too much knowledge can be devastating. We know this because Eve had knowledge that the snake told her about the fruit. This is why she ate it. Similarly, Charlie was gaining a lot of intelligence and is starting to overlook people of high intelligence.

External conflict is a problem a character has with an outside force. An example of an external conflict in "Flowers for Algernon" ,is Dr. Strauss and Dr. Nemur. Dr. Nemur wants to publish Charlie's results right away, but he is not thinking about Charlie. He is only thinking about himself. He only wants the money because of his shrew of a wife and because of the position at Princeton University. "I remember hearing Burt say that Dr. Nemur had a shrew of a wife who was pushing him all the time to get things published so that he could become famous" (Keys 104). Dr. Strauss wants to wait to publish the results. He thinks that the results could change over time. Over all Dr.Nemur is in it for the monein the o characters.

In the story "Flowers for Algernon" an example of a static character would be Mrs. Flynn. A static character is one who does not change throughout the story. For example," My landlady Mrs. Flynn is very worried about me. She says the way I lay around all day and don't do anything I remind her of her son before she threw him out of the house (Keyes 120)." Another example, " Mrs. Flynn knows I'm really sick and feels very sorry for me(Keyes 121)." These two quotes show how Mrs. Flynn's thoughts and feelings towards Charlie never change;,she still cared about him before and after he was smart. Her character never changed from the beginning to the end of the story which makes her a static character.

In the story "Flowers for Algernon" Charlie had a character vs. character external conflict with one of the new men that came to work there after he left. In the story it states, " One of the new men who came to work there after I went away made a nasty crack he said hey Charlie I hear your a very smart fella a real quiz kid. Say something intelligent" (Keyes 123). This is an character vs. character external conflict because the new worker is making jokes about Charlie. The jokes could make Charlie less secure about himself and could hurt him mentally.

"Flowers for Algernon" represents internal conflict because of Charlie's hard time understanding things. In the text it says, " I didn't know what to do or where to turn. Everyone was looking at me and laughing and I felt naked. I wanted to hide myself. I ran out into the street and I threw up. Then I walked home. It's a funny thing I never knew that Joe and Frank and the others liked to have me around all the time to make fun of me" (Keyes 99). Charlie is now realizing that he was always made fun of by his so called friends. He was surprised to see that he was never really a friend rather a laughing stock. This represents internal conflict because he had never known that his coworkers were actually so mean to him.

The story "Flowers for Algernon" shows allusion. Allusion is an expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference. One example is when Charlies coworker, Fanny, is telling him about the incident of Adam and Eve. In the story it states, "She stared down her work, and I turned to leave. Without looking at me, she said: "It was evil when Eve listened to the snake and ate from the tree of knowledge. It was evil when she saw that she was naked. If not for that, none of us would ever have to grow old and sick and die" (Keyes 107). This is an allusion because she talks about a past reference from the bible, and how it reflects to Charlie.

In the story, "Flowers for Algernon" there is a struggle between Charlie and acceptance of society. Charlie Gordon is a mentally disabled 37 year old man, who is constantly made fun. Charlie believes that Joe, Frank, and his fellow coworkers are his friends. However, he is actually made fun for his disability. Referring back to the story, "Flowers for Algernon" it states, " Joe Carp said I shoud show the girls how I mop. I showed them and everyone laffed.."(Keyes 94) They mistreated him because they know that Charlie can't fully comprehend what is occurring around him. So, the workers (society) believe it is humorous to see someone who isn't as intelligent, being manipulated into a source of entertainment. This is characters v.s society because society mistreats Charlie because of his disability.
