America bought the land covered in the Lousiana Purchase from France on April 30, 1803 for $15 million. The land covered was 828,000 square miles, and costed 15 cents an acre.

Lewis and Clark Expedition- Began in 1804

Meriwether Lewis and William Clark explored the American Northwest by the orders of Thomas Jefferson. They met Sacagawea, a Native American girl who became their interpreter and guide. Their main objective was to map out the Missouri and Colombian Rivers and learn the geography.

Increased Voting Rights- 1828

The presidential election of 1828 was between Andrew Jackson and John Quincy Adams. It was the first to allow non-property-owning white men to vote in most states. In this election Maryland allowed Jews to vote, making it the last state to remove religious restrictions on voting.

Rise of the Democratic Party- 1828

Economic and social changes and differing views on the definition of freedom caused the rise of the Democratic Party. This caused tensions to rise, and a new ideology was needed to resolve them. Jackson brought about a new style of leadership.

Indian Removal Act- 1830 and Trail of Tears- 1831

The Indian Removal Act was signed by Andrew Jackson and allowed the president to force Native American tribes living west of the Mississippi eastward, to allow more room for colonists moving west of the Mississippi. Because of this, the Cherokee, Muscogee, Seminole, Chickasaw, and Choctaw nations were forced from the southeastern states to the newly designated Indian Territory east of the Mississippi. On the route, Native Americans suffered from disease and starvation which led to thousands dying during and immediately after the journey. The Trail of Tears is now known as both genocide and ethnic cleansing.

Manifest Destiny (idea or belief begins)- 1840

Invention of the Cotton Gin & its Impact on Cotton Production (beginning in 1793, but the impact continued throughout the 1800s)

The invention of the cotton gin separated the seeds and fibers of a cotton plant. This job had previously been completed manually by enslaved people. Because more cotton could be separated in the same amount of time the demand for slave labor to pick cotton increased.

Rise of Mass Production & the Factory System/”Mill girls” in Lowell, Massachusetts- 1814 to the Rest of the Century

Specialized machinery such as power looms and spinning frames were used to produce many products from one building. Workers included the working class, immigrants, women, and children. Conditions for the workers were harsh, with days typically ranging from 10-12 hours.

Completion of the Erie Canal- 1817

Rise of the Abolitionist Movement- early 1800s /Frederick Douglass

The movement was a rapid, immediate plan to abolish slavery. Historians believe it began during the Second Great Awakening religious movement. Frederick Douglass escaped slavery and began the movement in Massachusetts and New York with his antislavery speeches and writings.

Seneca Falls Convention- 1848

The Seneca Falls Convention was the first women's rights convention. It spanned over two days and was organized by female Quakers (People belonging to the Religious Society of Friends, a Protestant denomination) and Elizabeth Cady Stanton. They debated law and the role of women in society.
