I chose this image because it shows how different we can look on the outside versus how we actually feel on the inside. In the context of the quote, sometime teachers don't understand the trauma a student has gone through or may be struggling with. This can be especially true if the student is acting out and the teacher views the student as a "troublemaker". Often the teacher may forget emotional distress can express itself other ways than just tears.

In the book Edmin speaks about how he witnesses his students in rap cyphers and sees how it creates a space where the neoindegenous provide clues to the outside world about how to engage across differences. As educators we can use the cypher model to help engage our students. From this idea cogens are born.

I chose this video because in it Christopher goes into detail about how to get the "magic" to engage students. I believe this goes with Ch.4 because in it, it speaks about Cogens. Cogens are open conversations between students and teachers that help co create plans for the classroom. This helps get students from all different backgrounds a voice to shape their class. It builds a sense of community and the teacher can feel more connected as they take on the suggestions from their students.

I chose this video because although it is a prank, it shows how quickly you can be locked out from connecting from your students and the tension it can create. When you have no connection with your student, it is almost impossible to reach them with your instruction. Something Edmin did when he taught at a primarily white Ivy league school was allowing the students to teach the class. When you come from a different background, you must acknowledge the difference and then adjust your teaching accordingly.

I chose this video because it shows students leading a classroom lesson. Edmin explains in the book that he allowed his students to reteach one of his lessons. He was surprised at the real life examples his students used. He jotted notes so he could use this in his teaching because the students really seemed to get the lesson better from a different view. As educators we should always allows our students to give input to better our lessons and reach more students.

I chose this video because it shows how everyone in the classroom can have their own role. The roles directly relate to how the classroom functions. They should not just be assigned but allow volunteers. If an assignment does not get done no one steps into do it. It creates a healthy peer pressure that results in accountability.

For example, in the video it portrays Obama giving an African American man a bro handshake. This sends a message that he is one of them and that he understands. One can show that they are directly speaking to a certain culture by the cues they use.

It allows the communities to deal with stress without violence that is often pushed by gun companies, the media, and local businesses that profit from the tension. It reminded me of the two "warring" groups the Democrats and Republicans.

Obama speaks properly to the crowd and then they "translate" what it may look like in a nontraditional way.

In the video, Chandra explains that code switching is good skill to have, but it can have a cost. She explains that by code switching we are killing diversity. Students feel as if they must turn off a part of themselves to fit in. I'm not sure if I entirely agree with this, but I appreciated the different view point. I feel as if code switching is a good skill because you learn where standard English is appropriate and when we can use slang and cultural linguistics.
