Origin of the english language

The history of the English language really started with the arrival of three Germanic tribes who invaded Britain during the 5th century AD. These tribes, the Angles, the Saxons and the Jutes, crossed the North Sea from what today is Denmark and northern Germany. At that time the inhabitants of Britain spoke a Celtic language. But most of the Celtic speakers were pushed west and north by the invaders - mainly into what is now Wales, Scotland and Ireland.

In late Middle English, a sudden change in pronunciation began, with vowels being pronounced shorter and shorter. Beginning in the 16th century, the British had contact with many peoples from around the world.

This, and the Renaissance of classical learning, meant that many new words and phrases entered the language. The invention of printing also meant that there was now a common language in print. Printing also brought standardization to English. Spelling and grammar became fixed, and the dialect of London, where most publishers were located, became the standard. In 1604 the first English dictionary was published.

Germanic people

The Germanic peoples, are an Indo-European ethno-linguistic group of Nordic European origin. They are identified by their use of Germanic languages, which diversified from Proto-Germanic during the Pre-Roman Iron Age.

The term "Germanic" originated in classical times, when groups of tribes living in Lower, Upper and Greater Germania were referred to by Roman scribes using this label. These tribes generally lived to the north and east of the Gauls. They were reported by historians of Rome to have had a critical impact on the course of European history during the Roman-Germanic wars. particularly in the historic Battle of the Teutoburg Forest, where the defeat of three Roman legions at the hands of Germanic tribal warriors precipitated the strategic withdrawal of the Roman Empire from

Northernmost Europe, in what now constitutes the European plains of Denmark and southern Scandinavia, is where the Germanic peoples most likely originated. This is a region that was "remarkably stable" since the Neolithic Age, when humans began to control their environment through the use of agriculture and the domestication of animals. Archaeological evidence gives the impression that the Germanic people were becoming more uniform in their culture as early as 750 BCE. As their population grew, the Germanic people migrated westward to the coastal floodplains due to soil depletion in their original settlements.

What comes to mind when you think of British culture? Probably quite differing traditional stereotypes. On the one hand, you might think of James Bond ordering a sophisticated Martini or of stylish celebs attending Wimbledon. While on the other, you might of the accentric capers of Mr. Bean. The UK is a multi-nation, multi-ethnic land of diversity an contrast. And yer you'll find it hard to meet a Brit who doesn't love good cup of tea with a nice chocolate biscuit.

An interviewee called Tamsin from Leicester, suggests that there are no strict rules for greeting somebody in the UK, the only essential element is that it’s awkward. In a country like Spain, the social rules for handshakes or giving two kisses are quite clear. In the UK, greetings can range from a formal handshake to a hug to a nod of the head or perhaps just a simple “Hello”. Such lack of guidance spells social disaster, as one person goes in for a hug while the other is offering a reserved head nod. The result is embarrassment for everybody, and thus a typical British interaction has begun! Try to minimise the awkwardness by at least having some greeting expressions up your sleeve. Click here for some typical expressions in English

BRITISH TRADITIONS

The UK is full of castles, narrow streets, charming little houses and also many traditions that have their origins in ancient times, in the people who occupied the islands, such as the Celts, the Romans and the Vikings. In this summary I will bring you the 3 most unusual and different customs, festivals and traditions that exist in the UK.

1. CHEESE ROLLING - running the cheese down the hill.

One of the funniest customs, precisely because it is a cheese rolling down the hill. Several people go down the hill called Cooper's Hill, and run down to get three giant rolls of cheese (each round weighs four kilos), and the hill is not very straight, it is full of holes, so it is normal to have many accidents. It is believed that this festival has its origins in pagan celebrations, where barrels were thrown down the hill.

2. SOLSTICE - Summer at Stonehenge

This is one of the coolest, which is to see the sun rise on the Summer Solstice at Stonehenge. To celebrate the longest day of the year, hence the name Summer Solstice, many people go to mystical and sacred places like Stonehenge where they have very old stone circles. They spend the night and watch the sunset. It is the only day that Stonehenge opens its doors (its access) for free, so people go to the circle to touch the stones, do rituals and sing with other people.

3. UP HELLY AA - Viking festival with fire

The Vikings invaded Great Britain and settled in several cities, mainly in the islands of Orkney and Shetland, which are islands that lie just north of Scotland. And in Shetland the biggest fire festival in Europe takes place, more than a thousand people dress up as Vikings and they wear shields, helmets, armor, and carry torches through the streets. The goal is to set fire to the replica of a Viking ship, while they sing several songs, it is a celebration of the island's history and also a demonstration of the skill of some locals.

ECONOMY

Cradle of the Industrial Revolution, the UK started its activities in this sector of the economy with the production of steel and textiles. Currently, the country stands out for its great diversity in industrial activities, sheltering a modern industrial park with car, plane and airboat manufacturers. Other important aspects are the financial, commercial, port and tourism centers, in addition to the textile, chemical and petrochemical industries. Fifth largest economy in the world, the UK has not substituted the pound sterling for the euro (official currency of the economic block). The country has one of the largest economies in the world, and is also a member of the select Group of Eight (G-8), which is formed by the seven richest and most industrialized nations in the world.

BREXIT

In recent years, several European countries have suffered economic and political crises and, as could not be otherwise, the European Union has been affected. Specifically, starting in 2016, the process of the United Kingdom's exit from the European Union began, known as Brexit (British + exit). In a tight and unexpected result (51.9% x 48.1%) the population of the United Kingdom (which includes Scotland, Northern Ireland, England, and Wales) chose to leave the economic bloc, breaking a 47 years agreement. The population's disbelief in the political system and campaigns based on Fake News contributed to this result. Broadly speaking, the main reasons that led to the Brexit are linked to promises to contain budget spending and focus investment on domestic needs (such as public health) and the migration issue.

GLOBAL INFLUENCE

The UK, the block that at its peak was the largest economy in the world, concentrating 22% of the world territory in the 19th century and with 458 million people, about 20% of the population at the time, and today, even with the decline of the empire and the territory the size of the state of São Paulo, is still the 5th largest economy in the world, with a GDP of 3.1 trillion dollars, being popularly known for the royal family, the industrial revolution and of course for its capital London, which is a global city and one of the main financial centers of the planet. Besides this, colonization was responsible for spreading the country's influence and culture on the world stage, and today English is the most spoken language in the world with more than 1.3 billion speakers, besides several fundamental creations and concepts for the West. Thus, the UK, which is a political union made up of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, has managed to remain influential as one of the most globalized nations in the world, with military power, nuclear power, and one of the five permanent members of the UN security council.

The first thing that probably comes in our mind when we talk about the topic “The United Kingdom”, is the Royal Family, so perhaps we can imagine people drinking tea, wearing bowler hats and gorging on fish and chips, this kind of stereotypes. But we need to know that this island country which is made up of mainland Great Britain (England, Wales and Scotland) and the northern part of the island of Ireland (Northern Ireland),has bacame much more rich culturally due the increase of immigrants for the past 2 decadates. Consequently we have a big diversity between some countries within the UK. Knowing the idea that there are many contrasts and diversity, it contribuites for our journey of knowing some of the British traditions,UK culture and more.

About the UK culture:
The religious performance dominant connected in the UK is the ones who affiliates to the official Church England while ten porcent identify with the Roman Catholic religion.
Several changes have been taking place in respect to family questions, some people are choosing to live together instead of getting married, divorce is becoming more understandable, same-sex marriage now has a law in its favor.
The class issue in the UK is also becoming more egalitarian as people of varied origins are getting more opportunities than before, however there are still privileged elites.
The important arts sector also play a very important role in British culture, we can’t talk about the United Kingdom without mention that it is the home of the Beatles, Rolling Stones, Adele and so many other famous artists, or the literature in which we can highlight Virginia Woolf, TS Eliot, Agatha Christie and Jane Austen.

Brexit and Economy:
Brexit was a period when the United States discontinued from the European Union, a vote took place to know the percentage of people who were in favor (something that was announced to the EU) and began its negotiations on its new relationship with the EU, which continued to follow EU rules and nowadays has a great connection with the US economy-The Gross National Income in the UK increased from GBP 492,534 million at the end of 2016 to GDP of 494,149 million in the first part of 2017.Britain imports a quarter of its food from the EU, but with the value of the pound against the dollar collapsing after the vote to leave the European Union for Britain, prices are likely to rise fast.

Traditions:
Some traditions are the akward greetings (they are very formal and simple), they do love to drink tea with biscuits (it isn’t just a stereotype),one of the main traditions is going to the pub it is their own “local” where they meet the costumers and staff, other one is pay for drinks in round (it’s commom when you are going out with alcohol friends you don’t pay just your own drink but for the others as well). The last one is about indentifying the accent, because in some places they have a recognisable accent when talking about something.

Global influence:
The UK is one of the majors force in international statesmanship, one of the world's leading military powers, the second highest international development donor, and has a huge global cultural influence. Nowadays one in four countries has a leader who was educated in the UK.

Economy:The gross domestic product of the British economy was 2.2 trillion British pounds in 2021 and was the fifth-largest global economy, behind the United States, China, Japan, and Germany. In 2020, the UK economy shrank by a record 9.4 percent due to the economic fallout of the Coronavirus pandemic. In some ways, the UK economy has successfully recovered from the sudden shock of the pandemic. An annual GDP growth rate of 7.5 percent was recorded in 2021, and the unemployment rate has quickly recovered to its pre-pandemic levels of less than four percent.

English language, West Germanic language of the Indo-European language family that is closely related to the Frisian, German, and Dutch (in Belgium called Flemish) languages. English originated in England and is the dominant language of the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia, Ireland, New Zealand, and various island nations in the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. It is also an official language of India, the Philippines, Singapore, and many countries in sub-Saharan Africa, including South Africa. English is the first choice of foreign language in most other countries of the world, and it is that status that has given it the position of a global lingua franca. nearly two billion of the world's population speak English.
How did the Germanic tribes influence English language?
The Vikings also influenced English at this time. Norse invasions, which began around 850, brought many North Germanic words into the language. Most of the modern English words have foreign, not Old English roots. For example words like be, water and strong derive from Old
English roots.
English is a West Germanic language that originated from the Anglo-Frisian dialects and was brought to Britain by Germanic invaders (8th and 9th centuries AD). One second invasion took place by the Normans of the 11th century, who spoke Old Norman and developed an English form of this.
The history of the English language really began when it reached the 3 Germanic tribes. These tribes invaded Britain during the 5th century after Christ. The Angles, Saxons and the Together crossed the North Sea, which today is Denmark and northern Germany. At that time, the inhabitants of Great Britain spoke a Celtic language, but most of those who spoke Celtic were sent west and north by invaders.
The angles came from England and their day was given the name of "englisc"
after many migrations, around 1000 a.C, some dialects of the European hymn language saw different groups of languages from each other, being one of these Celtic groups. Possibly from populations that already inhabited Europe during the Bronze Age for about 8 centuries, from 700 a.C, to 1000 a.C
The Celtic people lived in regions known today as Spain, France, Germany, England, and became the main group of languages in Europe, before the Celtic peoples almost fully assimilated by the Roman Empire ended. Old English (450-1100 AD)
The invading Germanic tribes spoke similar languages, which in Britain developed into what we now call Old English. Old English did not sound or look like English today. Native English speakers now would have great difficulty understanding Old English. Nevertheless, about half of the most commonly used words in Modern English have Old English roots. The words be, strong and water, for example, derive from Old English. Old English was spoken until around 1100. Middle English (1100-1500)
In 1066 William the Conqueror, the Duke of Normandy (part of modern France), invaded and conquered England. The new conquerors (called the Normans) brought with them a kind of French, which became the language of the Royal Court, and the ruling and business classes. For a period there was a kind of linguistic class division, where the lower classes spoke English and the upper classes spoke French. In the 14th century English became dominant in Britain again, but with many French words added. This language is called Middle English. It was the language of the great poet Chaucer (c1340-1400), but it would still be difficult for native English speakers to understand today. Late Modern English (1800-Present)
The main difference between Early Modern English and Late Modern English is vocabulary. Late Modern English has many more words, arising from two principal factors: firstly, the Industrial Revolution and technology created a need for new words; secondly, the British Empire at its height covered one quarter of the earth's surface, and the English language adopted foreign words from many countries.

The first population to speak English was the British, and more recently the Americans. About five hundred years ago, between five and seven million people spoke the language, today about 1.8 billion people do. Some argue that the historical and current bloodshed of Western imperialism has transformed the English language into a universal tool of communication. The British were the major superpower, and their method of colonization included establishing schools which taught English language and Western culture to locals who needed to be "modernized". Most former British colonies now use English as their official language (e.g. Ghana and South Africa).

It is assumed that about a quarter of the world`s population is already fluent or competent in English (that means around 1,5 billion people) and that there is a total of 75 territories where English has a special place in society. These regions can be divided according to the status they give English: Either they have English as a native language, as a second or official language or as a foreign language. This classification is visualized by the so-called Three-circle-model: The inner cirle compromises those countries where English is the primary language of communication and is learnt as a native language by the majority of the population. It includes the United States, the United Kingdom, Ireland, Canada, Australia and New Zealand. The outer or extended circle represents the countries where English plays an important role in a non-native setting. In many cases these are former British colonies where the English language is part of the countries leading institutions and of various other domains.

The 13 colonies were settlements installed by the British on the east coast of America during the 17th century.
