This quote of ethos due to it providing credibility for Douglass and evokes ethos by build his credibility before starting his actual work which helps the audience believe him. Because he doesn't know his age he can only take guess' based on rumors or evidence from the master. Most slaves never knew their own age.

This quote is chosen because it evokes logos due to the logic of selling of their children rather than keeping them and beating his children himself or his white kids. Also that children that were of son or daughters of the master and slave were hated by the masters wife. To protect their children, the master often sold them to neighboring plantations to save them from being wiped by their father or siblings.

This quotes represents pathos in Douglass' book because when reading this it tugs on the heart strings. It also brings out the feelings of love towards mothers because he never felt that due to the masters separated them a year after birth. This maternal feeling towards parents was taken away from slaves. Which affects the way a person thinks and feels.
