Troy and Cory’s disagreement about baseball and football stems from Troy’s bitterness over racial barriers that ended his baseball career, making him skeptical of Cory’s chances in football despite changing times. While Cory sees football as a pathway to opportunity and success, Troy, shaped by his own disappointments, believes hard work in a stable job is more reliable, ultimately stifling Cory’s dreams and straining their relationship.
