Intrepid aims for its business to be run in a way that respects the local people and places where they operate and to give back to those communities to continue a cycle which is of benefit for all. The travel industry is aware of the significant disruption that could come from climate breakdown and tourism restrictions. It is therefore in all travel companies' interest to prioritise climate action, community empowerment, and diversity and inclusion.

Intrepid's core purpose shapes its approach to ESG through their belief that local communities, wildlife and the environment can be protected and supported through the power of travel and tourism using responsible governance and initiatives. This is shown through their carbon-neutral initiatives and their commitment to climate action (Environment), the 50 community-based projects including supporting local businesses and using local travel guides to support the local economy (Social), and that travel should be done responsibly and transparently through their ESG reporting and their declared purpose (Governance). Through these initiatives and reporting, Intrepid are able to create positive change.

Intrepid have chosen these specific areas because they reflect the biggest ways a travel company can create positive impact while managing risk. Climate action helps protect the natural destinations that tourism depends on, community empowerment makes sure that local people/businesses truly benefit from travel, and diversity and inclusion supports fairer opportunities for staff, suppliers and travelers. Together these priorities align closely with Intrepid's purpose-led model and with wider industry trends that progressively expect travel businesses to be environmentally responsible, locally beneficial, and socially inclusive.

Intrepid Travel's purpose of 'creating positive change through the joy of travel' is a great example of finding the balance between purpose & profit. As a B Corp member, they have first acknowledged the impact travel has on 'local places & people', and have taken an environmental lens to actively seek ways of reducing travellers' carbon footprint. This social and environemental impact has a person-centred approach to working with the local stakeholders to diversify their solutions and make better decisions for the local communities. This focus is clearly defined for their customers, and asks not only for similar considerations of their customers, but also reaches out to them to partake in the framework by pledging to match their donations. This is a great example of an integrated ESG Strategy in action.

The very nature of the type of experience a traveller can expect from Intrepid Travel is in it's name - the customer wants/needs/desires to be 'intrepid', to travel the world, but connect deeply and personally. Undoubtedly, climate action will be foremost in the mind of such a traveller, so the risk for Intrepid would be not to actively and genuinely engage and prove their commitment to being a carbon-neutral company. Likewise a genuine connection with local communities takes a strategic plan for that long-term investment, which is evident from their Intrepid Foundation. This focus on climate action, community empowerment, and diversity and inclusion not only seems to create 'joy' for the traveller, but also for these key ESG issues, and therefore strengthening the Company's core purpose and foundation.

Intrepid Travel’s explanation of their core purpose is that travel can be a force for good. They have always been about giving back to the communities that they travel through.

They have used this core purpose to identify aligned ESG issues that they wish to focus on, being for instance Climate Change that is affecting where their tours are going and the communities that they are going through.

By identifying a particular ESG issue to focus, in this example Climate Change, Intrepid then has implemented plans to reduce their carbon footprint, decided to become a carbon neutral company by offsetting their emissions and investments in renewable energy projects and reforestation. These outcomes can clearly be liked to the core purpose.

Intrepid Travel's core purpose of 'creating positive change through the joy of travel' is very clear and concise. Intrepid tours aren't just about enjoying the views and having a good time. Intrepid is focused on not only minimising its impact on the environment (for example its animal welfare guidelines that inform interactions with wildlife) but promoting environmental conservation and protecting wildlife so travelers can make more informed choices about the types of interactions they participate in (for example banning elephant rides). The engagement of communities at a local level to enhance and retain local economic benefit is an example of how Intrepid manages its relationships with suppliers and communities. Intrepid's certification as a B-Corp demonstrates its commitment to strong governance to ensure transparency and accountability.

These three areas were chosen because they directly reflect both the company's values and the realities of the travel industry. Climate action is unavoidable given tourism's carbon footprint, and Intrepid's early carbon-neutral status shows genuine commitment. Community empowerment is central to their "force for good" purpose, ensuring destinations benefit economically and socially. Diversity and inclusion aligns naturally with a business built on cross-cultural engagement. Together, they address ESG in a way that is specific and meaningful to a travel company.
