Psycho shows the first change in the horror genre as the genre shifted from a literal monster like Frankenstein's monster to a more figurative one like Norman Bates, a "figurative" monster being someone that looks and comes across as "normal" but mentally that person is a "monster", this figurative monster can be portrayed by the scene where Norman Bates spied on Marion through a peep-hole, and the scene that follows being the horrific shower-murder scene where "Norman" murders Marian by repeatedly stabbing her to death. Showing that any normal person can be a "monster" and showing the shift from a literal - to a figurative -monster in the horror genre
