Gatsby Fires Workers

At the beginning of the chapter we learn that Gatsby has fired all of his old workers and hired new ones that are associated with Wolfshiem. On page 119 it states, “Wondering if he were sick I went over to find out–an unfamiliar butler with a villainous face squinted at me suspiciously from the open door.” This gives the reader a sense of eeriness going into the chapter and makes us question if these new workers are safe, especially since we know about Wolfsheim and his shady businesses that Gatsby is involved in.

Lunch at the Buchanan's House

We learn Nick, Gatsby, Jordan, Daisy, and Tom would all be having lunch together at the Buchanan house the next day. Nick describes being invited to the luncheon on page 120 by saying, “He was calling up at Daisy’s request–would I come to lunch at her house tomorrow? Miss Baker would be there. Half an hour later Daisy herself telephoned and seemed relieved to find out that I was coming. Something was up.” This prepares the reader for something to happen at this lunch event based off of the diction Fitzgerald used in this passage. We can sense something will happen, so this passage is setting up the mood and tone for the rest of the chapter.

Introduction of Pammy

Daisy’s daughter, Pammy, is introduced at the luncheon. Nick describes meeting her on page 123 by saying, “Gatsby and I in turn leaned down and took the small reluctant hand. Afterward he kept looking at the child with surprise. I don’t think he had ever really believed in its existence before.” Gatsby is shocked when he sees her because he barely believed that she existed. Pammy’s existence is living proof of Tom and Daisy’s relationship, which is a hard pill for Gatsby to swallow.

Tom Hears Daisy Tell Gatsby She Loves Him

On page 125, Nick describes the moment of Daisy telling Gatsby she loves him in front of Tom as, “Their eyes met, and they stared together at each other, alone in space. With an effort she glanced down at the table…She had told him that she loved him, and Tom Buchanan saw. He was astounded. His mouth opened a little and he looked at Gatsby and then back at Daisy as if he had just recognized her as someone he knew a long time ago.” In this passage we see Tom start to realize Daisy and Gatsby’s relationship, which comes as a shock to him. He doesn’t know how to react, but this is karma coming for him since he has been doing the same thing to Daisy for longer than she can imagine.

Daisy insists that the group goes out to the city. Gatsby and Daisy’s eyes lock, and it's at this point that Tom realizes their relationship. On page 125, it says, “All right,’ broke in Tom quickly, ‘I'm perfectly willing to go to town. Come on–we’re all going to town.’ He got up, his eyes still flashing between Gatsby and his wife. No one moved. In this passage we see Tom begrudgingly agree to go into town for the sole purpose of confronting Gatsby while there.

When the group stops at Wilson’s garage for gas on the way into town, they find out the sad news that Wilson is aware of his wife's affair. On page 130, Nick describes the moment by saying, “The relentless beating heat was beginning to confuse me and I had a bad moment there before I realized that so far his suspicions hadn’t alighted on Tom. He had discovered that Myrtle had some sort of life apart from him in another world and the shock had made him physically sick.” Although Wilson doesn’t know who she is having the affair with, he decides to move out west as a result of this.

Tom and Gatsby call each other out. On page 137, Daisy tries to stop this by saying, “...Daisy guessed at his intention. ‘Please don’t!’ She interrupted helplessly, ‘Please let’s all go home. Why don’t we all go home?” but she is unsuccessful in her attempts. Tom criticizes Gatsby by saying he is a bootlegger, and in return, Gatsby tells Tom that Daisy never loved him. Daisy admits that she did love Tom and that she also loved Gatsby. Tom ends up sending Daisy and Gatsby back home to prove that even with the two of them being alone together, Daisy will not leave Tom for Gatsby.

Once things start to settle down, Nick realizes that it is his 30th birthday. On page 142-143, it states, “No…I just remembered that today’s my birthday.’ I was thirty. Before me stretched the portentous menacing road of a new decade.” Despite this being a new decade for him, Nick automatically views it as a decade of despair and loneliness, which we can assume is a result from the tragic events that have occurred that day. He reassures himself by saying that he has Jordan by his side no matter what, which is true.

He then tells Nick to see what Daisy is doing, only to find her and Tom eating. On page 153, Gatsby says, “I want to wait here till Daisy goes to bed. Good night, old sport.” This quote from the end of the chapter shows that no matter what happens between Gatsby and Daisy, he will always love her.
